Borrowing Policies and Loan Rules [top]

Material available for loan through the Circulation Desk includes the circulating collection on levels 2 and 3, Government Documents, the Oakes Room books, the Reserve Collection, and Learning Materials Center material. Reference materials and journals do not circulate. Special Collections and Media Resource Center materials must be checked out in those departments.

University of Maine borrowers must be currently enrolled or employed at the University; they must present their University of Maine MaineCard to borrow books, use the reserve collection, or borrow from the Media Resource Center. University of Maine System borrowers (e.g. students and employees from other campuses) must be currently enrolled or employed by the system, and must present their university library identification card to borrow books or use the reserve collections. Alumni, Courtesy, and corporate card patrons must have a current record at Fogler Library and must present their Courtesy card to borrow books or use the reserve collection.

The loan periods for the circulating collection are:

  • University of Maine Graduate Students                     semester loan
  • University of Maine Honors Students                        semester loan
  • University of Maine Undergraduate Students              28 day loan
  • University of Maine Faculty                                     semester loan
  • University of Maine Staff                                         semester loan

  • Other University of Maine System patrons                28 day loan
  • Maine State & Bangor Public Library patrons            28 day loan (as of October 16, 2006)

Loan periods for Government Documents, Oakes Room and the Learning Materials Center vary and are often limited to 28 days or less. Most material can be renewed, and all material is subject to recall after two weeks, or immediately if needed for reserve.

Change of Address [top]

If you have changed your name, address, telephone number, or social security number, that information must be changed at both the student record office and at the library. Please see Circulation Staff to make changes in your information at the library.

Identification Cards [top]

Fogler Library accepts several kinds of identification cards, as outlined below. All cards, including MaineCards, must be entered into the library patron database before library services (e.g. book check-out, online database access, requesting materials through URSUS) can be used. Staff at the Circulation Desk will link the library barcode on the MaineCard to the patron record in the library database upon request.

General note about library identification cards and online database access: Due to licensing agreements with database vendors, the only card that provides online access to licensed indexes and databases is the University MaineCard. Other cardholders may search online databases from within the library, but not from remote locations.

MaineCards [top]

Fogler Library uses the University MaineCard as the library identification card. MaineCard holders must be currently enrolled or employed at the University to borrow material. The Gold MaineCard is also used as the library identification card.

Lockers [top]

Fogler Library has a limited number of lockers available for loan each semester. The lockers are located on the first and third floors of the building. Lockers loans are reserved for University of Maine students and faculty. Lockers are loaned by the semester and must be renewed at the end of each semester. Circulation staff take applications for lockers at the main circulation desk. Rules for locker use include:

  • library material must be checked out before being stored in a locker
  • non-circulating material is not allowed in lockers
  • all items must be removed from the locker on or before the expiration date
  • failure to return a key or lock may result in fees or replacement charges
  • Fogler Library is not responsible for items missing or stolen from lockers. All lockers will be searched on a regular basis

Lost and Found [top]

Lost and Found is located at the main circulation desk. Lost and found items are kept at the circulation desk for approximately three months.

Overdues, Fines, and Replacement Charges [top]

  • Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy. In order to provide faster and more efficient service to our patrons, Fogler Library has begun sending courtesy reminder notices (5 days prior to date due), first and second overdue notices, recall notices, hold pick-up, and cancellation notices via email. Fogler will use a patron’s email address from student records and payroll. If none is provided, the above notices will be sent regular mail, as will invoices and statements. Courtesy reminder notices are sent via email only.
  • Failure to receive notification of an overdue item does not relieve the borrower of penalties.
  • Fines for most material accrue at $0.50 per day with an additional $45.00 replacement charge for non-return of the material.
  • All fines and replacement charges incurred by University of Maine students for Fogler material are debited to their university account and are due to the university. Faculty, staff, and other cardholders must pay fines and replacement charges for Fogler Library material at the Fogler Library Administrative Offices. Charges incurred by any borrower and due to other University of Maine System libraries may also be paid at the Administrative Offices.
  • Borrowing privileges may be suspended as a result of fines and replacement fees.

Pick-up Location for Held Materials [top]

All material requested through Interlibrary Loan, the URSUS request function, Maine InfoNet, or from Fogler Library holds and recalls are held at the main circulation desk. Material is held for approximately one week, so please pick up your material promptly. You will need your identification card to get the material held at Circulation.

Printing and Copying in the Library [top]

  • Along with other campus departments the Library has implemented a print management system. Pharos Uniprint has been installed on the printers in the Information Commons and Science and Engineering Center. Students and staff will be given $16.00 on their MaineCard each semester to use for printing at any of the Uniprint locations. The print management system tracks usage and will show the printing funds balance each time you swipe your card. If the $16.00 is used before the end of the semester the system will automatically draw from whatever campus funds are available on your card. The printing charge at the library is .04 per page.

  • Photocopying at Fogler library also uses the MaineCard for payment. The copying charges come from the campus funds account. You can add money to your MaineCard Campus Funds in either the MaineCard office, Fogler Library or in the Union lobby. The copying charge at the library is .08 per page.
Recall and Search Requests [top]
  • If an item is checked out to another borrower, circulation staff will recall it for your use, after the first borrower has had the item for two weeks. Note: the library cannot provide any information about the person who has the book checked out.
  • If an item has the status "available" in URSUS, but is not on the shelf, the circulation staff will search the stacks and mail a notification to you when the item is located.

Renew Your Books [top]

  • You may renew your own books from the library home page at here on URSUS.  Books may also be renewed by email at circulation@umit.maine.edu, at the circulation desk, by telephone (581-1666), and by mail.
  • Books may be renewed if they have not been requested by another borrower and if they are not overdue.
  • Borrowers may renew their books if their borrowing privileges have not been suspended or blocked.
  • You are responsible for recording the renewal date. Material is limited to two renewals.
  • After the renewal limit is reached, borrowers must return all books. Any book needed for a longer period may be rechecked out at that time. We established this policy to encourage borrowers to return books that they are no longer actively using. More books on the Library's shelves increase the ability of borrowers to browse the collection and provides more immediate access to materials than our recall system provides.

Returning Library Materials [top]

  • Books must be returned to the main circulation desk, or to the check-out desks at the north and east entrances of the library. When the library is closed, use the book return slots at the north or east sides of the building. Exceptions: Reserve materials must be returned to the Reserve Desk. Media Resource Center materials must be returned to the Media resource Center. Special Collections material should be returned to the Special Collections Department.
  • Patrons returning books in person may request a receipt at either the main circulation desk or the East Charge Desk.
  • Materials may also be returned by mail to the library or returned to any University of Maine System library or center.

Suspension of Borrowing Privileges [top]

Borrowing privileges are suspended when fines have been incurred or when books are overdue and not returned. Please see circulation staff for assistance with blocked records.

View Your Own Record [top]

  • display the items currently checked out on your record
  • display any items currently on hold for you
  • display unpaid fines and replacement charges
  • renew your own books
  • print your record
Do not leave your record on the screen (we recommend closing the browser window). Do not share your identification card or barcode number.
