Fogler Library Tours

Library entrance Tours for University of Maine Faculty, Staff & Students

Tours of Fogler Library may be arranged for UMaine students, faculty, and staff. Tours cover public service areas and the collection. Databases, on-line resources, and instruction in the use of library resources are not included in the tour.*

Size of Tour Groups

We recommend groups of 15 or less. Larger groups have more difficulty hearing the tour guide, seeing what is being described, and maneuvering the building. When staffing permits, it is sometimes possible to tour two groups of 15 simultaneously.

Length of Tour

Tours run from 30 minutes to an hour depending on questions.

Scheduling a Tour

Reservations should be made at least two weeks in advance. To arrange a tour, contact Jerry Lund at 581-1695 or email jerry.lund@umit.maine.edu. Faculty may also contact their library liaison. Every effort will be made to accommodate your visiting group. We do, however, reserve the right to decline requests if there are scheduling conflicts, or insufficient notification time for necessary arrangements. Scheduling conflicts do arise, so please plan alternate dates and times prior to calling.

Subject Specific Instruction

To arrange a subject-specific instruction session, faculty should contact their library liaison.

High School Groups

Supervision of visiting high school students is the responsibility of your high school staff, and we recommend that you plan for an 8:1 ratio of students to adults for your visit. While this is not normally a problem, please let your students know in advance of your visit that noisy or unruly behavior is inappropriate in an academic research library. Please note also that Fogler Library does not provide staff to assist in supervising visiting students and that we reserve the right to terminate a tour at any time if conditions or student behavior are in appropriate.

Elementary School Groups

Requests for elementary school group tours are considered on a case by case basis. Our primary concern must be for the University students, faculty, and researchers who use our library. The short attention span and noise level of younger children can be a challenge in an academic library environment. We ask that you consider strategies to keep the group focused on the goals of the tour. We also request a 5:1 ratio of students to adults.
