Tips for Searching URSUS
for Children's Literature

Limiting the Search to Children's Material or the Learning Material Center

You can limit your search to Children's Material in the University of Maine System This limit can only be done after you have entered your search words. This means that you need to select a Subject, Keyword, Author, or Title and hit the "search" button and then select Children's Material from the scroll down menu next to the box containing the search words. You can limit your search to the Learning Materials Center either before or after you enter your search terms. Click on Individual URSUS Collections and then select UM Learning Materials Center in the drop down menu next to the University of Maine.

How to Search for Children's Books by Genre

Note: All categories can be searched by Keyword. Some categories can be searched by Subject. For categories that can be searched by both Subject and Keyword, it is more efficient to use Subject. Always remember to limit your search to the Learning Materials Center or to Children's Material or you will pull up adult material as well as children's books.

Fiction

Click on link to URSUS
Search Alphabet book by Subject. Use Alphabet as your search term.
Search Biography by Keyword. Use the Biography as your search term.
Search for Contemporary Realistic Fiction in the blue binder in the LMC.
Search for collections of Fables by Subject. Use Fables as your search term.
Search for Fantasy using Subject. Use Fantasy as your search term.
Search for Folk tales use Keyword. Use Folk Tales as your search term.
Search for Fairy Tales using Keyword. Use Fairy Tales as your search terms.
Search for Historical Fiction by Keyword. Use History Fiction for your search terms.
Search for Legends by Subject. Use Legends for your search term..
Search for Nursery Rhymes by Subject. Use Nursery Rhymes for your search terms.
Search for Multicultural by Keyword. Use the name of country or ethnic group for your search terms (Example: Cuban OR Latin).
Search for Mystery by Subject. Use Mystery for your search term.
Search for Myth by Keyword. Use Mythology for your search term.
Search for Poetry by Keyword. Use Poetry for your search term.
Search for Science Fiction by Subject. Use Science Fiction for your search terms.
Search for Tall Tales by Keyword Use Tall Tales for your search terms.
Search for Wordless picture books by Subject. Use Stories Without Words for your search terms.

Non-Fiction

Click on link to URSUS
You may search Non-Fiction by Subject or Keyword.
Use Keyword if your topic doesn't correspond to a Subject.

Picture Books

Click on link to URSUS
Click on Numbers on the main URSUS screen.
Select Dewey/State Document/Canadian/EU document from the drop down menu
Type in JPic-this will give you a list of all the picture books
Click on the black button that says Limit This Search
Change the drop down menu to Words in the Subject
Type in your topic.
