URSUS is a good tool for finding books and government publications for your assignment. It's best to search by subject or keyword, unless you already know the title or author of a work that you want to find. Subjects are controlled terms used within the catalog to group like items together, keywords are any words found in the record for a item, including subject terms. If you attempt a subject search, but that subject doesn't exist in the catalog, URSUS will identify possible alternate subject headings. Remember also to try alternate spellings.
Example one: finding a book by subject
Subject search: Baffalo Creek.
Click on subject heading: Buffalo Creek (Logan County, W. Va.) -- Flood, 1972.
View first in list list and note the call number and location.
Example two: finding a government publication by subject
Subject search: Teton Dam.
Click on subject heading: Dam Failures - Idaho - Teton Dam.
View first in list list and note the call number and location.
Example three - alternate spellings
Subject search: St. Francis Dam - turns up no results.
Click Search as words link. This performs a keyword search that looks
for term "St. Francis Dam" anywhere in the record.
Reveals that the correct subject heading is "Saint Francis Dam". Try new subject search using this spelling.
These examples are only a few ways to find information for your assignments. Many other resources are available for students' use at the Science & Engineering Center on the 2nd floor of Fogler Library, and additional electronic journals and databases are accessible from the library's website.
