Fogler has subscriptions to some very powerful electronic indexes and databases, many of them containing full-text articles available for printing. Use these to find scholarly publications and technical data. Electronic Indexes and Databases are usually not the best resources for finding older (pre-1980s) information, so there are also available print indexes for locating older materials, located in the Science and Engineering Center of Fogler Library.
While searching the databases, it is handy to keep the following key terms in mind:
Article - Usually found in magazines, journals, conference proceedings, newspapers and websites, but also in encyclopedias, books and other collections of work.
Bibliographic Record - Consists of identifying information such as title, author, publication, publication date, page number(s). Sometimes an electronic bibliographic record will link to an abstract or its full-text.
Full-Text - if an article can be downloaded in its entirety it is considered to be an electronic full-text article. In most cases, only the bibliographic records of articles are available, not the full-text.
Index - A list of bibliographic records usually ordered by author's last name or subject.
Database - An organized collection of information, usually searchable by any number of fields or keywords. Bibliographic databases can contain records to bibliographic information or full-text articles, or a combination depending on subscriptions and licensing rights.
Popular Magazines, Trade Magazines and Scholarly Journals - see: Identifying Scholarly Journals vs. Popular & Trade Magazines
Example one:
Academic search premier, Subject Term search, Full-text, Article Linker
Click on Subject Terms link.
In the Browse For box, search for Dam.
Check boxes next to Dam Failures and Dam Failures--Investigation and click Add.
Click Search.
Example two:
Engineering Village, Article Linker, Interlibrary Loan
Search "baldwin hills" OR vaiont OR teton in Title/Subject/Abstract. (Must use the OR modifier.)
View abstract of FOUR MAJOR DAM FAILURES RE-EXAMINED.
No linked full text. Check article linker.
Request via Interlibrary Loan.
Example three: Engineering Index
Use for finding older materials that are not indexed in electronic indexes & databases.
Call number: Index TA1.E6. Fogler has 1892-1995.
EI has a subject index and an author index. Use subject index for assignment.
Best to know what year your event happened in order to find appropriate index volume. For example, the Malpasset
dam failure took place late in December 1959, so best to look at 1960 index.
