Fogler Library has been designated as the Patent and Trademark Depository Library (PTDL) for the State of Maine since 1993, with the responsibility of assisting Maine residents to research U.S. patents and trademarks. We make available many electronic and print resources to accomplish this mission.

Online patent searching is available for 1976 to present http://www.uspto.gov, searchable by keyword, inventor, assignee, classification code, etc. Pre-1976 patent searches also available online using patent number or the Patent Classification System. Additionally, the 2nd floor Science and Engineering Center has a workstation provided by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for searching feature-rich, proprietary patent and trademark databases such as QPat, CASSIS and PubWEST. In-house databases offer additional benefits such as increased availability of full-text (keyword) searchable documents, foreign patent collections, customizable interfaces allowing for a more efficient, user-centered search environment, and the ability to save and export bibliographic data to other software such as MS Excel.

Also available are a full range of current reference books on patent law, examination procedures, inventor guidelines, the application process and marketing methods. These are located in the Science and Engineering Center near the patent and trademark workstation. Please contact Martin Wallace e-mail: martin.wallace@umit.maine.edu for assistance with using the databases, devising a search strategy, and obtaining patent and trademark information. British Periodicals traces the development and growth of the periodical press in Britain from its origins in the seventeenth century through to the Victorian 'age of periodicals' and beyond. Among the periodicals included in British Periodicals are titles founded, edited or regularly contributed to by a host of important figures - Walter Bagehot, Aubrey Beardsley, Annie Besant, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Frances Power Cobbe, William Cobbett, Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Henry Fielding, Ford Madox Ford, Oliver Goldsmith, Leigh Hunt, Jerome K. Jerome, Samuel Johnson, Sir Roger L'Estrange, G. H. Lewes, Harriet Martineau, Edward Moore, John Morley, John Henry Newman, Margaret Oliphant, W. M. Rossetti, Sir Richard Steele and Tobias Smollett to name but a few. In addition to providing access to the original periodical versions of landmark texts like De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium-Eater, Carlyle's Sartor Resartus, Cobbett's Rural Rides, Bagehot's The English Constitution, Gaskell's North and South and Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, the collection offers new ways of exploring the inaccessible, neglected or forgotten writings that formed their original contexts. A wide array of different types of periodical are represented, from magisterial quarterlies and scholarly and professional organs through to coterie art periodicals, penny weeklies and illustrated family magazines.

For assistance, please contact Mel Johnson: mel.johnson@umit.maine.edu or 207-581-3614, or Reference at 207-581-1673.

Maine's Elections 2009

The Maine Secretary of State provides information on the upcoming election.

Video Tutorial for E-Reserves

For help on accessing course E-Reserves through Fogler Library, view this new E-Reserves tutorial screencast. We will continue to use the backup server until the primary server is fixed. GPO apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused and we thank you for your patience.

The Library is deeply committed to offering its patrons 24/7 access to hundreds of thousands of publications online. A highlight of this effort is provision of electronic versions of federal government documents. Over a quarter million are already online via GPO Access through links in URSUS.

The good news is GPO offers reliability by assigning permanent links (PURLS). Now the bad news: a computer in Washington dedicated to maintaining PURL access crashed August 24. Back-ups ensured no loss of data. GPO staff continues to give restoration of the PURL server the highest priority. At present the resolution database is populated with more than 114,000 PURLs. GPO has apologized for the inconvenience the PURL server outage.

Workarounds:

Look for an alternate URL in the "Note" (just below the call numbers)

See if a second link is offered to "Fdsys" which is working

Google the title to see if a copy is available at another site

Use hard copy in Fogler Library

For assistance contact Reference 207-581-1673 or Ref_questions@umit.maine.edu.

MaineCat is Back!

Thanks again for your patience during the interruption of the MaineCat request function this summer. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on the environmental effects of individuals, corporations and local/national governments, and what can be done at each level to minimize these effects. Multidisciplinary by nature, GreenFILE draws on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology. The database provides indexing and abstracts for approximately 384,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,700 records. GreenFILE coverage is 74% unique when compared to Environment Complete, which is a more scholarly database. GreenFILE is for the concerned person looking for information on individual response to environmental issues, such as solar or wind power options; on corporate response such as alternative energies used in the business sector; or on local or government impact such as environmental laws and studies.

NEW Learning Materials Center Materials

The Learning Materials Center has new titles listed for April

Fogler Library Celebrates the University of Maine Yearbooks Online, April 17

For the past eighteen months, Fogler Library staff members have been engaged in digitizing the full run of the Prism yearbook and completed the final of 107 volumes in early March. The Yearbooks Online, which run from 1895 through 1997, are available to browse page by page from the Library’s web site. The online address is: library.umaine.edu/yearbooks.

To celebrate the completion of the project, we would like to invite members of the University Community to an afternoon event to be held April 17 from 3-4 pm at the University Club. A brief presentation of the project and the resulting resource will lead off the occasion followed by an opportunity for attendees to explore the site on individual wireless laptops with assistance from project team staff. Selected physical copies housed in our Special Collections will also be on display.

This event is free and open to the public. RefWorks is an online bibliographic management program that allows researchers to create a personal database of references. RefWorks can then be used to help write your paper by inserting in-text citations and creating a bibliography. Existing Libraries from other bibliographic management programs, such as EndNote, can be imported directly into RefWorks. To try out this software:

Go to https://www.refworks.com/RWSingle/login.asp?WNCLang=false

Enter RWUnivMaine (this is the group code for UMaine)

Click on the link for Sign up for an individual account.

Note: You will always need to enter the group code for remote access. This is true even for users on campus.

The Human Relations Area Files collate and code research in cultural anthropology in order to facilitate comparative studies of society and culture. Many unique titles not owned by the library in print may now be more readily identified and used. Fogler Library also provides access to the database Electronic HRAF at www.library.umaine.edu/indexesdb/Indexes.asp. Electronic HRAF picks up where the fiche left off in 1991, and at this time there is very little duplication between the two formats, so a more comprehensive culture search will use both resources. For assistance with HRAF, please contact Joe Fernandez (joe.fernandez@umit.maine.edu or 581-3611) or the Reference Desk (581-1673).

Fogler Video Podcast

This fall, Fogler Library will be introducing its first podcasts. The blog will bring together information that is currently being distributed through numerous channels and will include: new resources, library events, service information such as hour changes. During the trial phase, Fogler's "What's New" page will continue to carry much of the same information as the blog but we expect to merge the two media at some future point. An advantage of the blog environment is the ability to participate via commenting on blog entries. These comments will be moderated. Subject-specific blogs (eg. Engineering) are being developed as well and will be available after the pilot phase has ended. You can subscribe to the RSS feed or view the blog at https://www2.umaine.edu/blogs/fogler/index.php.

Student Art Work in Fogler

The selection of fourteen hand pulled prints behind the glass panels in the periodical section of the library were done by students taking Print 240 and Print 340 in the UM Art Department in Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters. The classes are taught by Kris Sader and Susan Camp. The UM print shop is unique in that it teaches students "Non-Toxic" print making methods that are friendlier to the print maker and to the environment. Students learn a variety of printmaking techniques as they explore a new art medium and learn to see and appreciate the history of printmaking and prints. Cohen Papers at the Raymond H. Fogler Library seeks to shed light on how Congress is designed to work and what politicians actually do on a day to day basis in Washington.
Titled "Cohen, Congress and Controversy: Rediscovering civics in the archives," the six-panel exhibit uses facsimiles of photographs, handwritten notes, speeches and campaign memorabilia from the former congressman’s political papers to bring the legislative branch into focus. Topics include Bill Cohen's successful 1972 bid for Maine’s second congressional district seat; the powers of Congress granted by the Constitution; the busy life of a senator, using Cohen's book about his first year there; and the oversight role of Congress, illustrated with documents from the Watergate and Iran-Contra investigations.
More information about the exhibit and its schedule can be obtained by calling Paige Lilly at (207) 581-2665, or emailing to paige.lilly@umit.maine.edu.

CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online database

CIAO, the Columbia International Affairs Online database includes:

This Cambridge University Press publication updates and expands the Census Bureau's 1975 work of the same name. It contains quantitative historical information covering virtually every quantifiable dimension of American history: population, work and welfare, economic structure and performance, governance, and international relations, all from the earliest times to the present. Also covers topics that received little or no coverage in the 1975 edition: American Indians, slavery, poverty, race, and ethnicity. HSUS allows one to graph and combine data from different tables into custom tables, and to download tables for use in spreadsheets and other applications. HSUS is also available as a five-volume print set in Reference (Ref HA202 .H57 2006). To access, go to www.library.umaine.edu/indexesdb/Indexes.asp.
Quick Link options - We've moved some key links to the top level page with a "Quick Search" box which you will find top and center. Use the tabs to quickly explore access to essential Library services including: Reserves, Renewals, Subject Portals and Indexes and Databases.

URSUS Quick Search - we've also added a quick search box link for URSUS, your best option for one stop searching of all Fogler Library resources. Our user statistics led us to title as your default search option but you can use the pulldown window to switch to keyword, author or subject searching.

Library as Place - We've added a photo of the library and direct links to hours, contacts and maps of the building.

Thanks go to our Fogler Library Focus Group participants for their evaluation of the prototype as we prepared for the new year launch of the page. We want to continue to be as responsive as we can to our diverse user community! If you have a question, concern or constructive comment we want to hear from you! ArticleLinker links have been set up in most of the major databases subscribed by the library, such as those from EBSCO (e.g. Academic Search Premier, PsycINFO), CSA (e.g. Sociological Abstracts, Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts), and Gale (MLA Bibliography).

Click on the ArticleLinker icon <img src="http://libraries.maine.edu/mariner/ssicon/AL_36.gif" alt="Article Linker" / > next to journal article citations in many of our online indexes and databases

Select your campus

Click one of the "Go to: Article" links, if available, OR

Click to search URSUS for the print journal at the library, OR

Submit a completed Interlibrary Loan request form.

If there are no ArticleLinker icons next to citations in a database, the publisher may not support the technology used, and URSUS should be consulted for online and print journal holdings. Questions? -- Examining national policy and regional action

William S. Cohen Papers Forum,
Wednesday, October 5, 2005,
10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,
Buchanan Alumni House,
The University of Maine.

Energy policy continues to confound us as it did in the 1970s when Representative Bill Cohen began promoting energy conservation and alternative fuels research in order to reduce dependence on foreign oil. Now, thirty years later, what compromises are needed to fuel the future and gain energy security for Maine and the nation? Our distinguished speakers will share their knowledge and lead a discussion of issues such as reliable energy, biomass conversion, and LNG terminal siting.

Please plan to join us for the second in a series of provocative discussions based on topics in the Cohen Papers. Registration information will be mailed in early September. See the following website for further information: http://www.library.umaine.edu/cohen/forum.htm

Fogler Library at New Student Orientation

Fogler Library Web and Public Relations Specialist Gretchen Gfeller will be representing the library at this summer's New Student Orientation and Information Fair.
