News from the Science Center

This fall the Science & Engineering Center inaugurated a new seminar series focusing on science information and its many forms. Science Center staff hopes to have at least four seminars during the academic year. The first presentation on September 30th was a panel discussion entitled “Communicating Science: Campus & Beyond.” Panelists Nick Houtman, Senior News Writer, Department of Public Affairs, Catherine Schmitt, Science writer at Maine Sea Grant and the George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental & Watershed Research, and Kathryn Hunt, Margaret Chase Smith Center for Public Policy, editor of the Maine Policy Review, discussed the job of science writing and translating complex information for decision makers. The second presentation was “Publication and the Peer Review Process: From Idea to Print” on Thursday, October 28th. During this presentation, faculty members Stephen Norton, Denise Skonberg, and Eric Landis took the roles of student, reviewer, and editor, respectively. The next sessions will take place during the Spring 2005 semester. All presentations are held in the University Club, Fogler Library. All are welcome to attend.
