| Locating Education Abstracts on the Fogler Web Page |

| You can go directly to the site from this link to Education Full Text or use the following instructions: |
| 1. From the Fogler Library web page at http://www.library.umaine.edu/ go to the link "Search in a Database" under the heading "Articles on your topic. |

| 2. Under the Databases A-Z list click on E. |
|

| 3. Then click on the link for Education Full Text |

| Accessing Education Full Text Remotely |

| 1. Enter your name and the number on the back of your Maine card to access Education Abstracts from non-campus computers. |
|
|
| 2. Your Maine card needs to be activated. If you have not checked out a book, you will need to have your Maine card activated at the circulation desk. |
| You can use the Thesaurus to help you locate subject headings that match the controlled vocabulary. This does not mean that you cannot use keyword searching. But if you are having difficulty finding results, it can be very useful to know the subject headings. | |

| We get the following results below. We can see that Leadership in Education is a subject heading and that a number of more narrow subject headings are available for this topic. | |

| 1. Advanced Search is the default setting for Education Full Text. This provides multiple search boxes that searches all of the default fields. If you leave the default setting for Smart Search you should not use * for truncation. The default setting for sorting is Relevance. | |

| 2. You can change to the default settings to other categories (e.g. author, subject, journal name, etc). You can also change the default sort (e.g. author, publication year, document type, etc). | |

| Limiting and Expanding in Advanced Search | |

| 1. You can place a number of limits on your search. When you place a limit on your search you will not see any records that do not match your limits. | |

| 1. You can limit by date or document type. | |
| 2. Because this database has a separate full-text
repository, it is NOT a good idea to limit your search to Full Text or
Page Image (PDF).
You will miss all of our online articles from EBSCO. Use Article
Linker to access the EBSCO full-text articles. Note: If you limit to Full Text Articles and Page Image (PDF), you will be limiting your results to articles that have both formats for the articles. This will be an even smaller subset of the articles in Education Full Text. | |
| 3. Clicking the peer reviewed link will limit your results to scholarly articles. | |
| 4. You should only click on the Expand box if you are not getting results. It is usually a better strategy is to change your search terms. | |
| 1. Click on the link with the article title to open the record and read the abstract. |

3. To print, email, or save an individual article you may open the article and
then print. For Full Text HTML articles click on the Print button at
the top of the page. For PDF articles you need to remember to click on the
icon of a printer.

| 4. You will need to mark the click on the box next to the records/articles that you want
print, email, or save. Otherwise you will
automatically select the entire set of from your search. To print,
save, or email records or groups of articles click on the Print/Save/Email button.

5. Next click on the action that you want to perform.![]() |
| 6. Unless everything in your set is full text, the default
setting is going to use the bibliographic record only. You
need to change this if you want to include the full text
articles. Click on the radio button that says FULL TEXT
(HTML/PDF).

| 1. Click on the Search History button to go back to earlier
searches or to combine searches. |
2. Click on the link "Search Results" to see the results from a
previous search.

| 3. Use the Search Number and the Operator drop down menus to combine searches. Use the Add button to enter them into the Search Builder box and then click on the Submit button. |
| 4. Click on the Create Alert for This Search Link to get updates on your search. This means that you will be notified when new items matching your search are added to the database. |
| 5. You can also create an alert directly from your search
results page by click on the button for Create Alerts. |
| 6. Fill out the form to create your alert.

| Locating Journal Articles in Fogler |

1. The journals are shelved in alphabetic order unless otherwise
noted in URSUS.

| 2. If Fogler does not have access to an item either online or in print you can request it through interlibrary loan. |
