This guide is for using the PC version of Endnote XI. There may be differences with other versions of Endnote. |
1. Create a Library |
1. Make a new library by clicking on the "Create a new EndNote library" radio button |
2. Name and then save your new library. |
3. You can enter references in the library manually for titles you have already collected by clicking References on the menu at the top of the screen and selecting New Reference. You should only use this method if you are not going to use a catalog or database to search for titles, since it is much easier to bring them into EndNote while you are searching. |
4. Select the Reference type from the drop down menu and enter the in the information in the spaces provided. |
5. Select the type of material you are going to enter. The default field is journal article. |
6. Enter the information about your resources into the fields. |
2. Direct Search |
1. Open or create an EndNote library |
2. Click on Tool in the top menu and select Connect. |
3. Scroll down until you highlight the connection for the source that you want to search and then click on the connect button. For EBSCO databases you will need to match both the Name of the database and the Information Provider |
4.For EBSCO databases, you will see the following
connection box.
Do not enter any information. Click on the OK button. |
5. Use the EndNote interface to search the resource. |
6. Highlight the citations you want to send. Use the control key to highlight results that are not contiguous. |
7. Click on the Copy Reference/s To button send the results to your EndNote library. |
3. Direct Export |
1. Many databases allow direct exporting including all EBSCO databases (see list above), ISI (Web of Science, and Biosis Previews), IEEE, ACM Digital Library, and CABdirect. |
2.The premise for all exporting is the same. Citation information is sent to either a folder or a marked list. |
Example of an EBSCO Folder |
Example of an IEEE Marked List |
3. Go to the Folder or Marked list and select the items. Then locate and click on the Export button/link |

Example of an IEEE Marked List with Items |
Sometimes the Export function is labeled differently. For IEEE you select Download Citations and select EndNote as the form in the drop down menu |
4. The items from the Marked List or Folder will be sent to EndNote and you will be asked to select a library. |
1. When direct export is not possible, then you need to export as a txt file and import into EndNote |
2. CSA Databases need to use this process. |
The following is a list of CSA databases at the University of Maine |
Example of Export/Import Steps with CSA |
1. Search the database and mark the items you want |
2. This puts your item in the Marked List. You can search again and then update the Marked list as necessary. |
3. When you are ready to export, click on the link for Save, Print, Email. |
3. Then click on the radio button for Use X Marked |
4. Ignore the instructions for QuikBib. These are not relevant. |
5. Make sure the file format is set for the type of computer you are using. Then click on the Save button. |
6. Click the Save button on the File Download window. |
7. Click the Close button on the Download Complete window. |
8. Open your EndNote library and click on Import under the File menu. |
9. Click the Choose File and select csaresults.txt for Import Data File. Go to Other Filters under Import Option and select the correct database and information provider. |
10. The records from the marked list will not be imported into your EndNote library. |
1.In order to use Cite While You Write or Manuscript Templates you need to have the EndNote toolbar installed on Microsoft Word. This should happen automatically when you install EndNote. |
2.The default setting for citations is the APA 5th. If you need a different form, you will need to change this in your EndNote library. |
3.To use Cite While You Write or Manuscript Templates you need to have both EndNote and Word open. |
