Selected Online Sources
- Cyndi’s List
Cyndi's List is an index to genealogical information on the web. It
includes online forms, and links to additional guides for beginners.
The topical index organizes links into broad subject areas, then
more narrow topics. The A-Z list is just an alphabetical index
of all subjects.
- Family Search
One of the best free sites on the web for genealogy research.
Compiled and offered by the LDS Church. Lots of detailed guides to
genealogy research, forms, web index, etc. Also an online index,
however, searches limited information - only the 1880 United States,
1881 British Isles, or the 1881 Canadian Census; church records for
Mexico and Scandinavia. Check out the "Research Guidance" tab, which
suggests specific resources to search based on geographic location.
- Ancestry.com
This is a fee-based subscription service. However, access is
available at the
Maine State
Library, Bangor
Public Library and the
LDS Family History Centers. Provides online access to multiple
censuses in full text. Includes an index.
- Heritage Quest
This is a fee-based subscription service.
Access is available to
Maine State
Library, Bangor
Public Library, and
Maine
Historical Society. This database provides access to
ProQuest's Genealogy & Local History Collection of 25,000+
family and local history books, the page images and corresponding
indexes for the entire US Census, 1790-1930, a comprehensive subject
index covering more than 6,500 genealogy and local history
periodicals, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant
Application Files, and more.
- Vitalchek
Fee-based service which provides copies of vital records from
anywhere in the United States.
