This guide lists some United States census resources commonly used by genealogists. The materials listed are located in Fogler Library at the University of Maine, Orono, Maine.
Census Schedules, Federal: Indexes and Finding Aids
Use these first if you're looking for a particular name in the census
records, and have an idea of the years you wish to search.

Census Schedules, Federal: Agriculture, Industry, and Social
Statistics
Census schedules for agriculture, industry & social statistics. Maine.
[1850, 1860, 1870, 1880. 24 reels]
Microfilm Un3 7th-10th
These schedules give background information about farms (production,
animals, acreage) and industry wages. There is no name index to the
named individuals found in the geographically arranged agriculture sections.
However, most farm owners should be listed in the population censuses, which
will give an idea of what town to look for in the agricultural censuses. Note:
Shelved next to the 1880 census in the microfilm cabinets.

States often conducted their own censuses. State census records (Ref Z5313.U5
L37 1992) is a bibliography. Internet access to census information
There are a number of web sites with census data and/or indexing that is
useful to genealogists. A good list of what's available may be found on Cyndi's
List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet under "Census Related Sites
Worldwide" and "U.S. Census." Maine
U.S. Census Records has some transcribed Maine census records for various
towns and years.
