ProQuest Newspapers

Basic Search | Advanced Search | Publication Search | Outputting Results

ProQuest Newspapers provides full text of more than 500 U.S. and international news sources. Includes The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, and the Times of London, plus hundreds of other news sources and news wires. Years of coverage vary by title. Maine papers included: Bangor Daily News (1992+), Portland Press Herald (1995+), and selected business coverage from Maine Times (1994-2002) and Central Maine Morning Sentinel (1993-1997).

Remote Acess: ProQuest Newspapers is available from off-campus. Off-campus users will be prompted to enter their name and MaineCard number to access the database.

Getting Started:

• Go to the Fogler Library home page: http://library.umaine.edu/
• Choose Databases

• Click on  
• Choose ProQuest Newspapers

Search hints

• Use the basic search for simple keyword searches, the advanced search to search within one newspaper of your choosing, or the publication search to see which newspapers are included in the database.
• The basic search is the default. Switch to other searches with the tabs shown below.

• :0 article

• ProQuest Newspapers uses Boolean operators:
  "mud hens" - articles retrieved with two words as a phrase
  "mud and hens" - articles retrieved with both words
  "mud or hens" - articles retrieved with either word, or both words
• Use ? to truncate. E.g. a search for "econom?" will look for economics, economy, economical, etc.

This is the search method that appears automatically when opening the database. Search options include:

• Boolean keyword searching
• date limiting with a pull-down menu
• restricting the search to full-text articles by clicking in the check box

In the advanced search, you may limit your search to individual fields (author, article title, newspaper, etc.) Use the pulldown menus to change which fields are searched.

To access a list of all newspapers included in Proquest Newspapers, click the icon to access the Publication Search page. From there, you may enter the name of a newspaper in the search box or click through the alphabetical list.  

Printing, Downloading, or Emailing Results: (back to top)

• From within the article, click on the , or button, -or-
  
• To print, email, or save multiple entries, check the mark box to the left of those citations you want from your results list
• Click on the   button and select Marked List & Durable Links from the drop-down box
  
• Select the option you want from the menu as shown below:
