"Microform"
means "[a product using] techniques for greatly
reducing the size of the printed page to save both space and copying cost."
(Bookman's Glossary. New York: R.R. Bowker, 1983)
Several kinds of Library resources are
included by the term "microforms,"
each representing a different format
compiled for a specific purpose. United States federal and state and
Canadian federal and provincial governments, as well as those of other
foreign national governments, and international bodies all produce microforms
of some kind. Many commercial organizations and scholarly societies
compile and publish microforms as well.
In
the 21st century microforms
depict new types of content including color illustrations, computer
generated records, and maps.
Fogler Library has
about 2.5
million microforms. Most are cataloged in
URSUS.
