B. FOGLER LIBRARY BLOG
Fogler Library has launched a moderated blog on an open source server
provided by IT. The blog brings together information currently being distributed
through numerous channels and includes: new resources, library events, service
information such as hour changes. During the trial phase, Fogler's "What's New"
page will continue to carry much of the same information as the blog but we
expect to merge the two media at some future point. An advantage of the blog
environment is the ability to participate via commenting on blog entries
(comments will be moderated).
Subject-specific blogs (eg. Engineering) are being developed as well and will
be available after the pilot phase has ended. You can subscribe to the RSS feed
or view the blog at
https://blogs.umaine.edu/fogler/index.php
.
2. DATABASES
A. JCR: A DATABASE FOR EVALUATING IMPACT OF JOURNALS:
Fogler Library now subscribes to Journal Citation Reports (JCR) from
Thomson ISI. JCR allows the user to evaluate and compare the impact of
journals. Journals can be displayed by subject area and organized by impact
factor, total citations to the journal, immediacy index, total number of
articles, and cited-half life. Individual journal titles can be searched.
A journal’s impact factor is defined by JCR as the number of citations to
articles published in a 2-year period divided by the number of articles
published during those same 2 years. JCR indexes over 5,900 journals from the
sciences and over 1,700 journals from the social sciences. Please read “Using
Journal Citation Reports Wisely” in the Information for New Users window. JCR
is available from the Indexes and Databases page of Fogler Library’s website:
library.umaine.edu/indexesdb/Indexes.asp .
