1. EVENTS
A. FOGLER LIBRARY CELEBRATES THE UNIVERSITY OF MAINE YEARBOOKS ONLINE, APRIL 17
For the past eighteen months, Fogler Library staff members have been engaged
in digitizing the full run of the Prism yearbook and completed the final of 107
volumes in early March. The Yearbooks Online, which run from 1895 through 1997,
are available to browse page by page from the Library’s web site. The online
address is:
library.umaine.edu/yearbooks.
To celebrate the completion of the project, we would like to invite members
of the University Community to an afternoon event to be held April 17 from 3-4
pm at the University Club. A brief presentation of the project and the
resulting resource will lead off the occasion followed by an opportunity for
attendees to explore the site on individual wireless laptops with assistance
from project team staff. Selected physical copies housed in our Special
Collections will also be on display.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. We
encourage you to stop by and take the premier tour with us.
2. DATABASES
A. INFORMATION OVERLOAD? HOW TO STAY CURRENT: BIOSIS PREVIEWS, COMPENDEX AND
INSPEC
Automated current awareness services available to you... The citations
retrieved by your search strategy will be e-mailed to you at regular intervals.
The BIOSIS Previews database is the most comprehensive resource for the life
sciences, covering 5,500 serial publications and other research literature.
Through an interface from OVID, Inc called AutoAlert (SDI), a saved search can
be run automatically and regularly without any further intervention on your
part. The AutoAlert profile retrieves newly-added documents on your topic and
e-mail them to you weekly via email. To establish an AutoAlert for your research
interests choose BIOSIS Previews from the Fogler Library home page, Indexes and
Databases listing.
Compendex and Inspec are the most comprehensive database for engineering,
applied physics and computer science research. Combined. they index over 5,000
journals as well as technical reports and conference proceedings. Their
interface makes available a Personal Profile capability, allowing a researcher
to have a personal login to the databases and to maintain keyword (subject)
searches. The database is updated weekly with new research articles. This is a
very efficient way to learn about new research that may be relevant to your
interests.
Call or e-mail your department's library liaison for more information and for
detailed instructions. Fogler Library subject specialist page:
