2. Collections
A. William S. Cohen Papers Accessible
3. Databases
A. New Database: SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts)

In 1999 the Maine Legislature designated Fogler Library as Maine's
Science, Technology, and Business library. The funding provided through this
designation has allowed us to provide statewide access to a number of
valuable research databases including: Biosis Previews; Zoological Record;
ABI Inform Global; and ABI Inform Trade and Industry.
To meet the ever-growing needs of our researchers and businesses as
they strive to compete in the global marketplace, Fogler is launching a new
Science/Technology/Business web portal that provides links to publicly
available information resources on the Internet as well as to the databases
funded by the Maine State Legislature. The resources listed on the site will
be evaluated by a librarian and chosen for their relevance to the businesses
and industries in Maine. These resources will assist the business community
in developing new products and in taking them effectively to market, and
will also support the development of new businesses across the state.
The new web site will include access to state, regional, national, and
international resources, as well as to Maine-produced databases, report
series, and statistical datasets, and links to Maine government agencies,
Maine research organizations and foundations. It will highlight new research
initiatives in the University System and throughout the state and will
maintain links to calendars that describe business and industry meetings and
conferences. The site will be regularly updated and the sources continually
checked and evaluated.
There is a need for a well-organized entry point for state, regional,
national, and international resources. The science/ technology /business
portal will be providing a very valuable information source that will
enhance the economic climate of Maine. We invite you to visit the site at:

Significant portions of the William S. Cohen Papers in Special Collections
at Fogler Library are now open for research. Cohen is a Bangor native who
served in the U.S. Congress for 23 years, followed by four years as U.S.
Secretary of Defense in the Clinton administration. The collection, which
arrived in 1996 in 1,500 boxes, is organized into six record groups: Private
Papers, U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, Audiovisual Materials,
Photographs and Memorabilia, and Department of Defense. The House and
multi-media materials are available this year while the Senate and DOD
materials, partially accessible now, will be opened fully in years to come.
The Fogler Library web site ( describes
Cohen's career, provides background information, and includes a detailed
inventory of the collection which can be searched with keywords. As part of
Fogler's Digital Libraries Initiative, electronic copies of selected video
clips, photographs, and Defense department public statements are linked to
the inventory. For further information, or to arrange a research
appointment, contact Archivist Paige Lilly at or

SciFinder Scholar, produced by CAS, the Chemical Abstracts Service, provides
online access to references in chemistry and related sciences. The database
covers the international literature, including chemical patents, from 1907
to present. A sophisticated interface enables searching by CAS Registry
Number, chemical structure, chemical reaction, and many other approaches. To
obtain a copy of the SciFinder Scholar client software for your
workstation(s), check out an installation CD-ROM (Windows or Macintosh, call
number CDROM QD1 .S264) from the Fogler Library Media Resource Center on
Level 2. SciFinder Scholar is restricted to use by faculty, students, and
staff of the University of Maine only. The Library has a license for one
user at a time, so please remember to log off the database (click the
SciFinder “Exit” button) when you are done searching! If you have any
questions about installing the software or using the database, contact the
local SciFinder Site Administrator, Nancy R. Curtis, Science & Engineering
Librarian, or 581-1679.
