1. NEWS
A. REPORT OF THE AD HOC TASK FORCE ON FOGLER PERIODICAL COLLECTIONS
Executive Vice President and Provost Robert Kennedy appointed an ad hoc task
force to make recommendations on how best to make adjustments in the Fogler
journal collection in light of the changes made during the summer months and
the second addition of new base funds identified in mid-September The
Report discusses Fogler funding and makes short and long term
recommendations for the management of periodicals in the collection. The
full text of the report is available at <
http://library.umaine.edu/colldev/taskforce.htm >.

B. REMOTE ACCESS TO ELECTRONIC JOURNALS NOW AVAILABLE
Off campus users, many of whom use commercial Internet services (e.g.. AOL)
will now have access to virtually all of our electronic journal resources
when using the following link: http://library.umaine.edu/ejournals/ which
can be found on the "For the Faculty" web page at:
http://library.umaine.edu/govdoc/forfaculty.htm.
For licensed subscriptions, most publishers require that access be
restricted to computers with University of Maine campus IP addresses
(Internet Protocol, a unique string of numbers that identifies a computer on
the Internet.) Implementation of a proxy server enables the authenticated
user to be recognized as coming from a computer with a University IP
address. Users will be prompted to enter their last name and the barcode on
their MaineCard for authentication.
Off campus access to online journals through links in URSUS is planned for
Spring 2004.

2. SERVICES
A. TIME TO SCHEDULE LIBRARY INSTRUCTION SESSIONS
As you know, our break in between semesters is shorter this year. While you
are working on next semester's syllabi, here's a reminder to schedule your
library instruction sessions now, while there is still space available.
Contact your library subject specialist to schedule a session; the list of
subject specialists can be found at
http://library.umaine.edu/colldev/contacts.htm. For those in Education or
Psychology, please contact Nancy Lewis.
