A. PRESENTATION: "COMMUNICATING SCIENCE ON CAMPUS AND BEYOND"
Science research and education are integral to the University’s mission. Did you ever wonder: How science stories are told? How to become a science writer? How to determine which stories to tell? How to write stories for a particular audience? How to translate complex information for decision makers?
You are invited to attend "Communicating Science on Campus and Beyond," a panel discussion with Nick Houtman (Senior News Writer, Department of Public Affairs), Catherine Schmitt (Science Writer, Maine Sea Grant, Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental & Watershed Research), and Kathryn Hunt (Editor, Maine Policy Review, Margaret Chase Smith Center for Public Policy). Join us on Thursday, September 30, 2004, from 3:00-4:00 pm, in the University Club, 2nd floor, Fogler Library. This program is organized and sponsored by the Science & Engineering Center, Fogler Library. For further information contact: Jim Bird, 581-1697, Jim.Bird@umit.maine.edu

A. RECENT CHANGES TO ACADEMIC SEARCH PREMIER
EBSCOhost recently announced several modifications to the Academic Search Premier database. Most notably, a comprehensive subject index has been added, which can be accessed via the “Subject Terms” button at the top of the search screen. Subjects which are hyperlinked will show broader, narrower and related terms by clicking on the link. You may add the terms to your search by checking the box to the left of the term and then clicking the “Add” button at near the top of the screen. Subject terms may be linked using the Boolean operators in the drop-down box next to the “Add” button.
Other changes include the availability of additional indexes such as “Companies”, “People” and “Reviews & Products”. These are accessible via the “Indexes” button at the top of the search screen. In addition, search results may now be grouped by the following source types: scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, monographs/reference books or educational report. Click on the source type at the top of the results screen to filter the citations by type. If you have any questions or comments regarding this or any other Fogler Library resource, please contact the Reference Desk by phone at 581-1673 or via chat/email at http://library.umaine.edu/reference/VR/AboutFoglerVR.htm
A. JEWISH HERITAGE VIDEO COLLECTION
The library is pleased to announce that it has added the core Jewish Heritage Video Collection to its holdings. The collection, which is listed in URSUS and housed in the Media Resource Center, comprises nearly 200 titles, including feature films, children's programs, foreign and Yiddish classics, television programs, and documentaries. The result of a grant submitted by Laura Lindenfeld to the New York-based Charles H. Revson Foundation, the collection required $2,500 in matching funds, which were providesd by the Minsky Judaic Studies Fund, supported by the families of Norman Minsky and Leonard and Renee Minsky of Bangor. Videos may be viewed in the library or checked out to University patrons, as well as organizations and individuals throughout the state. For more information, see www.jhvc.org.
