1. NEWS
A. SCIENCE DIRECT ONLINE NOW AVAILABLE: 1800 JOURNALS
The University of Maine System Libraries are pleased to announce that more than
1,800 ScienceDirect full-text online journals are now available, thanks to
annual funding from the University of Maine System, the University of Maine, and
the University of Southern Maine. The new ScienceDirect license will provide
access to faculty, staff and students at all campuses through the end of 2011.
ScienceDirect is a critical research tool, with highly-cited journals that cover
topics in the life, health, physical, and social sciences.

2. SERVICES
A. COMPUTER MAPPING, GIS, GPS WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE FREE TO YOUR STUDENTS
Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is now a desirable skill
for entry to many professions. Help your students broaden their career options
by letting them know about this series of three-hour workshop which are free to
UMaine students ($5 to all others). All are held in the Fogler Library Computer
Classroom. Instructor is Frank Wihbey, Head, Government Publications, GIS, Maps
and Microforms Department. Offered this fall are:
GIS for Everybody- The Introduction; GIS for Businesspeople; Basics of Using a
GPS Receiver ; Adding your GPS Layer to a Digital Base Map; Converting GIS Data
Formats; and Finding Digital Maine Map and Numeric Data Resources
