1. Workshops
    A. Last Call for GIS Immersion Workshop Friday, November 9
2. Services
    A. Patent And Trademark Depository Library Program
A "GIS Immersion Workshop" will be held in the Library Classroom Friday November 9, from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.  When a similar workshop is offered by commercial enterprises, they are charging about $400 for the day.  But our fee is only $25 ($10 students).
For those who cannot take the individual weekday workshops one at a time, here’s the whole shebang in a single day. An introduction to planning your project, computer mapping, ArcView 3.3 software, important applications and techniques, and strategies on how to find ready-made numeric data tables and maps in digital form. Hands-on sessions with plenty of individual help during the "lab" components.
This is a chance to get a jump start in this growing field which appears to be finding its way into uses in every profession.  Contact Karen Stewart on FirstClass or 581-4607 right away to register.
Every attendee gets a 70-page workbook and a CD of data files to keep.   Also, the Library's GeoStats computer is available for future self-paced practice. Karen Stewart and I will be available for advice by appointment.

Patents are often an overlooked source of scientific, engineering, historical and genealogical information. Fogler Library has been designated as the Patent and Trademark Depository Library for the State of Maine since 1993, with the responsibility of assisting Maine residents to research or apply for U.S. patents and trademarks. We make available computer and print resources to accomplish this mission.
Online patent searching is available for 1976 to present ( ), searchable by keyword, inventor, assignee, classification code, etc.  Pre-1976 patent searches are also available online using patent number or the Patent Classification System.  The Science and Engineering Center has a computer workstation provided by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for searching of the patent and trademark databases.
This also provides efficient access to view and to print the entire full-text of the patent with one print command. We also own current guidebooks on patent laws, examination procedures, inventor guidelines, the application process and marketing methods. These are located in the Science and Engineering Center near the patent and trademark workstation.  Please contact Martin Wallace, e-mail: or 207-581-1678 for assistance with using the databases, devising a search strategy, and obtaining patent and trademark information.
