Learning Materials Center Collection and Policies

Fogler Library's Learning Materials Center (LMC) supports the University's education curriculum with a collection of high quality educational materials for use with children from preschool through grade twelve.


The LMC covers levels Pk-12 and includes the following print and non-print materials:

Picture Book Collection  (call number begins with JPic)
 
Juvenile Collection  (call number begins with Juv)
Children's literature, both fiction and non-fiction.
 
Teen Collection (call number begins with Teen)
Young adult literature, both fiction and non-fiction. 
 
Textbooks (call number begins with TextB)
A representative sampling of textbooks for grades K-12 in many subject areas.
 
Reference Books  (call number begins with LMCRef)
Samples of non-circulating resources have come to the LMC from the regular Reference Collection and are organized using the Library of Congress classification.  A growing number of children's reference books are also contained within the LMCRef section;  these are organized by Dewey numbers. 
Software (call number begins with Software
        Most items are CD-ROMs supporting both IBM and Mac platforms.  
    
Non-Print Materials (arranged in Dewey Decimal order)
Filmstrips, audiotape cassettes, video cassettes, Compact Discs,  slides, charts, kits, flashcards, pictures, games, phonodiscs and posters. This section has undergone a serious weeding in (1998-1999).
 
Resource File
Educational materials, ideas, guides, pamphlets, clippings, etc. These materials are filed alphabetically, by subject, in the filing cabinets .
 
Periodicals
Back issues of children's magazines are available in the filing cabinets. These circulate just as other LMC material.  For titles see:  http://www.library.umaine.edu/lmc/lmcper.htm
Children's Collection (call number begins with Child's Col)
Children's literature with an early imprint date and of representative importance in the history of children's literature.  This collection is housed in Special Collections.

Hours:  During regular university semesters we will be open all the hours that the library is open.  

Circulation: Materials from LMC circulate for four weeks. They are checked out and returned at the Circulation Desks on the first floor.  Software is checked out for a period of two weeks.  Reference items do not get checked out.
