URSUS

URSUS, the online library catalogue of the University of Maine System, contains a wealth of information on aquatic resources. Searching is by author, title, subject, keyword, and call number. Through URSUS, you can find books, proceedings volumes, state, federal, Canadian, and other international documents, University of Maine theses and dissertations, and other resources. Most material is catalogued by Library of Congress Subject Headings. The following subject headings will get you started in your search:

Aquaculture, Aquatic Invertebrates, Aquatic Ecology, Aquatic Plants, Aquatic Weeds, Benthos, Coastal Ecology, Estuarine Biology, Estuarine Ecology, Eutrophication, Fishery Resources, Freshwater Plants, Limnology, Mariculture, Marine Algae, Marine Ecology, Marine Fungi, Marine Mammals, Marine Pharmacology, Shellfish Culture, and Shellfish Fisheries.

A complete list of subject headings can be found in the four volume Library of Congress Subject Headings located near the Science and Engineering Center office. URSUS also contains many "see" and "see also" references to lead you to other subject headings.

INDEXES AND ABSTRACTS AND INTERNET RESOURCES WITH EXTENSIVE AQUACULTURE LISTINGS

The following indexes and abstracts are available in the Science and Engineering Center, through the Indexes and Databases page, or on the Internet. When using an index or abstract for the first time, please read the introduction to find out how to search it effectively, what it does and does not cover, and the type of material indexed. When using a file on the Internet for the first time, always read through any introductory and help screens.

In most printed indexes and abstracts, citations are given using an abbreviated journal title. Check in the front of the issue you are using or at the end of the yearly cumulation for a complete title of the journal so that you can use URSUS to determine whether or not the University of Maine owns the title. Many times, online databases have extensive help screens.

BIBLIOGRAPHIES FROM THE NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL LIBRARY

The following is a selection of bibliographies produced by librarians and information specialists at the National Agricultural Library. They are the results of searches conducted on the AGRICOLA database. Each bibliography has at least 100 citations to the literature on the particular topic researched. Sources include books, journal articles, extension and experiment station publications, conference proceedings, dissertations, etc. These bibliographies provide a very good starting point for research. They are available in the Government Documents section of the library and must be requested by call number at the Reference Desk on the first floor. Note that each bibliography listed includes the search strategy used to produce it.  By using this search strategy in the Agricola database, the search can be updated.
