Elsevier's ScienceDirect®:
Articles at Your Desktop

The University of Maine System has subscribed to ScienceDirect®, a full-text journal service from Elsevier. With this subscription, we are offering University of Maine students, faculty, and staff access to complete articles from over 600 "subscribed" journals published since the mid- or late 1990s. This collection includes those titles available in print at Fogler Library, such as the Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) suite, Journal of Chromatography (A and B), and the Physica suite. It also features many other titles for which the Library does not hold a print subscription, including Brain Research, Brain Research Reviews, Chemosphere, Deep Sea Research (parts I and II), Journal of Biotechnology, Social Science & Medicine, and Surface Science Reports.

Users who create an online ScienceDirect® "profile" can obtain papers from an additional set of over 400 "non-subscribed" journals. These include many titles of interest to the University of Maine community, such as Biomaterials and Biosensors and Bioelectronics. Elsevier will charge the University of Maine System Libraries each time a user accesses the complete text of an article from these journals. We encourage users to peruse the abstracts of "non-subscribed" articles (available at no additional charge to the Libraries) before judiciously selecting items for full-text display.

The ScienceDirect® interface permits searching by journal subject area, journal title, and keywords. Many of the articles are displayed in PDF format, requiring the use of Adobe Acrobat Reader™ software. First-time users should study the Brief Guide to ScienceDirect® before using the resource.

This is a very exciting development for the University of Maine and we appreciate your feedback on this new service. Please contact Jim Bird (581-1697) if you have any questions or comments on ScienceDirect®.
