Historical Information:
Company E of the 8th regiment was organized by Capt. Thomas Hutchins at New Portland, Maine in May of 1861. They were mustered in on Sept. 7, 1861 at Augusta. After short stays in Long Island, NY, Washington, DC, and Annapolis, MD, the regiment embarked on October 18, 1861 aboard the steamer Ariel. They landed at Hilton Head, SC on the 9th of November and from that time until the spring of 1864, were, for the most part, employed there and in Jacksonville, FL. The regiment was mustered out on Jan. 18, 1866, at Fort Monroe, and discharged at Augusta, Jan. 25.
