Historical/Biographical Information

Food cooperatives are organizations of individuals who get together to purchase groceries in quantity directly from the distributor, thus avoiding “retail” costs. These began to become popular in the early 1970’s and reached a peak in the 1980’s. The material in the collection reflects this.

The collection contains papers of the Friends Food Cooperative Corporation in Liberty, Maine. Included are a few records of the cooperative and its activities, newsletters from other cooperatives, and literature from cooperative living organizations
