Provenance: The Hayden papers came to the Special Collections Department from the Calais Free Library, Calais, Maine.
Collection Number: MS 233.
Box Numbers: 1-2 (formerly Boxes 199, 199a).
Size and Arrangement: The collection consists of one archival record carton and one document box of material (2 cubic feet).
Conservation Note: The collection has been re-housed in acid-free folders and boxes.

Restrictions on Access and Use: Kept at Fogler Library's offsite storage facility. One week's notice required for retrieval.
 
Biography
 
The collection contains daily diaries kept between 1821 and 1867 by Richard Vose Hayden of Robbinston, Maine. There is very little biographical information available about Hayden. He was born on May 28, 1795, in Winslow, District of Maine, and lived for most of his life in Robbinston. He also spent time in Washington, D.C. and New York City, as well as in various places in Maine. Information from the diaries indicates that he worked at a variety of professions, especially as a teacher, farmer, surveyor and woodsman.
 
Scope and Content Note
 
The collection consists of diaries kept by Richard V. Hayden from 1821 through 1867. The title page of the first diary has the notation: “Some of the little incidents that have occurred in the life of R.V. Hayden.” The diaries give very detailed information about Hayden’s daily life, including the weather, his varied work activities, and local and national events. Information about the lives and deaths of his friends and neighbors in Robbinston, Perry, and Eastport, Maine, is also noted. Diary number 36 and numbers
41 through 46 are not included in the collection. Photocopies of each diary present are also available.
 
The collection also contains several daybooks, 1827-1836 and 1850-1857, outlining work done by Hayden in a variety of occupations.
