Biography
Francis Ashbury Ireland, the son of John P. and Martha M. Ireland, was born in Dexter, Maine, on July 27, 1843. He was educated in the public schools there and was a member of the class of 1889 of the Maine Central Institute. During the Civil War, he was a private in the 22nd Maine Regiment, Company E, serving in Virginia and Louisiana, where his regiment took part in the siege of Port Hudson.
After the war he was employed by the Pomeroy Woolen Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and later served as a messenger in the Massachusetts Senate for 23 years. Ireland died in Pittsfield on April 28, 1928.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains letters written by Francis A. Ireland to his family between September 1862 and July 1863 while he was serving in the 22nd Maine Regiment, Company E. The letters were primarily written from Bangor, Maine; Washington, D.C.; Alexandria and Newport News, Virginia; and Baton Rouge, St. Martinsville, and Port Hudson, Louisiana. They provide detailed descriptions of the daily life of a soldier and give insight into the psychological state of the men in the company.
A few letters to Francis Ireland from his father and brother are also included in the collection.
