History

The 8th Maine Infantry Regiment was mustered in on September 7, 1861. Company E of the regiment was organized at New Portland, Maine, and was under the command of Captain Thomas Hutchins with Charles B. Knapp becoming captain in July 1863. After short stays at Long Island, New York, Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, Maryland, the regiment embarked for Hilton Head, South Carolina, landing there in November, 1861. They were employed there and in Jacksonville, Florida until the spring of 1864. They then saw service in the Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns and were mustered out on January 18, 1866.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains records of Company E of the 8th Maine Infantry Regiment, especially accounts and inventories kept by the captain of company clothing, equipment and ordnance. It also includes muster rolls, reports of manpower, company morning reports, etc. A folder in the collection contains correspondence and documents of Charles B. Knapp who served along with Thomas Hutchins as captain of the company.
