Scope and Content Note

This collection contains copies of photographs of Passamaquoddy Indians in Maine made from original photographs held by the Smithsonian Institution Museum of American History. These copies were purchased by Fogler Library from the Smithsonian in 2002 using funds from the Katharine O’Brien Fund.

The photographs are arranged by the negative numbers assigned by the Smithsonian. The items numbered 74-8164 through 74-8376 are described by the Smithsonian as having come from photographic negatives made from originals loaned by Susan M. Stevens, Maine Bureau of Indian Affairs. The items numbered 826 through 837-A-2 and 44,743 are described as having come from negatives from the Bureau of American Ethnology glass negative collection. The photographs are accompanied by photocopies of information found on the back of each photograph; this includes the name of the tribe, the subject of each photograph, its source, date, and photographer if known, plus any other information found on the original item.
