Biographical Information:
Professor Alpheus Sanford was graduated from the University of Maine with a B.A. degree in 1947. While attending the University, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to Phi Kappa Phi. He received his M.Ed from Boston University in 1954 and Ed.D. in 1959. His career included employment as an underwriter at the home office of New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Boston where he continued his education at Boston University. The call to teach sent him to high school positions in counseling and guidance from 1950 to 1954 in Houlton, ME and Concord, MA. He then became Director of Guidance for the state of Vermont from 1954-1958. He was appointed to the College of Education faculty (counselor education) in 1958 at the University of Maine and retired from there as Professor Emeritus in 1991.
Contents:
Papers of a professor in the College of Education at the University of Maine. The papers reflect the career of a college educator in the field of counseling and school guidance from 1958 until retirement in 1991. Included are course syllabi, overviews of the counselor education program, performance agreements, pupil and peer evaluations, journal articles, and other materials related to graduate education at the University. Also included are records of eight Counselor Education Institutes resulting from the United States National Defense Education Act of 1958. Dr. Sanford taught in all of the Institutes, and directed six of them. Dr. Sanford was influential in establishing a K-12 developmental school guidance program in the state of Maine. Material in regard to this development is included in his papers. Also included are some writings of a special interest of Dr. Sanford's which he referred to as "Partnership Counseling". Box 827c includes background Information on Dr. Sanford's earlier days as a student at the University of Maine and Boston University and his employment at the home office of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co.
