Biography

Walter B. Smith was born in Hampden, Maine. He was a geologist for the USGS survey in Colorado 1884-89 and pursued archaeology in Maine, 1906-1929. He was also a founder and first curator of the Abbe Museum at Acadia National Park beginning in 1928.

Scope and Content Note

A collection of personal journals concerned with geology and archaeology, some correspondence, original illustrations of Native American artifacts, books, and pamphlets used by Walter B. Smith. The archaeological journals have been transcribed and indexed.
