Biographical Information:
Carl Sprinchorn was an artist and art historian who was born in Broby, Sweden in 1887. He came to the United States at the age of 16 and became a student of Robert Henri in New York. He was a contemporary and friend of Maine artist Marsden Hartley. In 1910, he made his first visit to the Maine woods and his first painting of that area. From 1917 to 1921, he spent his time painting in New York and Maine and after several years which he spent in Sweden and Santo Domingo as well as New York, he moved to Patten, Maine in 1937. In 1952, ill health forced him to leave the Maine woods and move to Selkirk, New York, where he died in 1971.
