Historical/Biographical Information

Ernest Osgood Sweetser was born on October 19, 1883, in Cumberland Center, Maine and died January 18, 1951. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1905 and in 1912 received an advanced degree in civil engineering there. He joined the Washington University faculty in St. Louis in 1905 and retired as head of the Civil Engineering Department in 1947. Herman Pittee Sweetser was born September 14, 1887, in Cumberland Center, Maine and died May 10, 1974. He graduated from the Greely Institute and the University of Maine. He served in the state legislature from 1945 to 1947. He was a professor of horticulture at the University of Maine from 1916 to 1925.

The collection contains the papers of Ernest and Herman Sweetser and consists of letters, diaries, photographs and memo books There is also an index to correspondence compiled by Elizabeth Sweetser Baxter.
