Maine Newspapers:
  • Casco Bay Weekly - online historical archive of this free and independent news weekly from Portland, Maine that ran from 1988-2004.
  • Digital Archives of Old Town Public Library - historical archive of several local newspapers. Searchable by keywords, and then able to limit by newspaper title and date. Titles, with the number of articles in each newspaper, include:

  • Maine Newsstand - index to and full text coverage of four Maine newspapers. Database includes comprehensive coverage of the Bangor Daily News (12/3/92-present) and the Portland Press Herald (10/30/95-present). Selected business coverage of the Central Maine Morning Sentinel (8/12/93-8/27/97) and Maine Times (2/4/95-present). Updated regularly.
  • NewspaperArchive - full-text, keyword-searchable image database of U.S. and international newspapers. Access is restricted to computers located within Fogler Library. Coverage of Maine newspapers include:

  • Proquest Newsstand - full text of more than 500 U.S. and international news sources including the New York Times (1999 to present), Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, plus hundreds of other news sources and news wires. Years of coverage vary by title. 
International Newspapers:
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic - full-text documents from over 5,900 sources, including international news, and non-English language sources.
  • Proquest Newsstand - full text of more than 500 U.S. and international news sources including the New York Times (1999 to present), Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, plus hundreds of other news sources and news wires. Years of coverage vary by title.
  • Regional Business News - full text newswires which incorporates news information from all over the world. Included in this database are A&G Information, Africa News Service, Inter Press Service, Resource News International, South American Business, M2 Communications, PR Newswire, Business Newswire, Canadian Corporate News, News Bytes News Network and Phillips Business Information Highlights.
Historical Newspaper Databases:
  • 17th-18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers - full-text access to the British Library's collection of the newspapers, pamphlets, and books gathered by Reverend Charles Burney (1757-1817)--the largest and most comprehensive collection of early English news media.
  • 19th Century British Library Newspapers - full runs of national, regional and local 19th century British newspapers, taken directly from the extensive holdings of the British Library.
  • 19th Century U.S. Newspapers - includes numerous newspapers from a range of urban and rural regions throughout the U.S.; advertisements and illustrations included.
  • America's Historical Newspapers - more than 1,000 U.S. historical newspapers published between 1690 and 1922, including titles from all 50 states.
  • New York Times Archives (1851-1922); the Personal Name Index to the New York Times (a print index) covers 1851-1989. The archives search at www.nytimes.com indexes the newspaper from 1996 to the present and the database "Proquest Newspapers" covers N.Y. Times in full text from 1999 to present.
  • NewspaperArchive - full-text, keyword-searchable image database of issues of more than 3,000 U.S. and international newspapers from the 1800s to the late 20th century. Date coverage varies by title.

Free Online Digital Archives:

  • Chronicling America -  searchable database of a large number of America's historic newspaper pages from 1836-1922; can also use the U.S. Newspaper Directory to find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present.
  • Google News Archive - a haphazard collection of newspapers digitized by Google. Some titles only include one or two issues while others have a much wider range of dates. Includes international newspapers.
  • Nouveautés Presse et revues (housed in Gallica, the BnF's digital library), is a rich online archive of French newspapers from the nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century. This collection is keyword searchable, and includes titles such as Journal des débats politiques et littéraires, Le Temps, Le Figaro, L'Humanité, La Presse, and La Croix.
  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Archives - digitized student newspaper from 1885 to 1976, searchable online by anyone. An earlier iteration of The Poly that only lasted for one semester, the fall of 1869, is also available in the archives. Useful for historical news and students' points of view.
  • Old Fulton NY Post Card Website: a searchable repository of over 26 million New York State historical newspaper pages. A list of the digitized papers, and their coverage, is here.
  • TV News Archive - from the Internet Archive, more than 570,000 news programs collected over 4+ years from national U.S. networks and stations in San Francisco and Washington D.C. Some older material is being added.
