Book Talk: Book bans and access to information
Fogler Library invites all booklovers to come to Book Talk this Friday, April 17, 5-7 p.m. for a lively discussion on book banning, restriction of access to information, and what it means for our communities. Special guest Lindsay Decker, Fogler librarian and member of the Maine Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Committee, will share insights from her work on the front lines of these conversations across the state.

Maine Day of Service — Gardening with Fogler Library!
Tuesday, April 28 is the annual Maine Day of Service, and Fogler Library will once again be marking the day by cleaning up the gardens at the east entrance of the library.
Any interested volunteers are welcome to grab a rake or a spade, and come and help us beautify our part of the campus. We will be there between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.
Gardening equipment will be provided by Facilities Management.

Therapy dogs return to Fogler Library
The ever-popular therapy dogs will be returning to Fogler Library on Tuesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 30, 2-4 p.m. on both days, to help bring relaxation and laughter to students as the stress of finals week looms on the horizon.
Therapy dogs have been visiting Fogler at the start of the academic year and during finals week every year since 2013, when Fogler’s then public relations manager, Gretchen Gfeller, teamed up with Rebecca Henderson of Renaissance Dogs. The dogs, along with their volunteer handlers, never fail to be a hit with students and employees alike.

Fogler landscaping proposal to be unveiled
On Thursday, April 30 at 3 p.m., Environmental Horticulture student Benjamin Flannery will be giving a presentation on his Fogler landscape proposal for the north patio area, which he selected as his service learning capstone project and has been developing over the past few months. Flannery’s project aligns with UMaine Libraries’ Sustainable Libraries Initiative certification, which asks us to support native landscapes, as well as qualifying UMaine to become a Bee Campus USA campus.
All are invited to attend this event, which will be held in the Salon at Fogler Library, and will also be available on Zoom. Light refreshments will be served.

New ceramics display
Fogler Library is pleased to host an intriguing new display of ceramic objects created by two University of Maine students.
Sloane Paul is a third-year English student with a concentration in analytical writing. Their work is primarily influenced by film and music. Their display pieces include ceramic phones inspired by Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Scream,” and a mug inspired by the Rolling Stones’ “Let It Bleed” album cover.
Vi Nelson is receiving their BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in sculpture this May. Their body of work is focused on creating ceramic musical instruments and the items on display include a variety of imaginative objects, each of which is capable of making its own unique sound.
The display is located in the Information Commons area, near the central hallway. Please stop by when you are in the area and enjoy the creativity of these two students.

Zoological Record
Worldwide in coverage, Zoological Record indexes the complete range of zoological subjects including animal behavior, genetics, parasitology, ecology, habitat, reproduction, zoogeography, evolution, nutrition, and taxonomy. It is a comprehensive resource for taxonomy. Approximately 6,000 serial publications, a broad range of monograph titles, proceedings volumes, and reports are indexed with approximately 72,000 entries added per year. Searching is by author, title, publication source, subject, geographic location, taxonomic nomenclature. Although abstracts are not included, detailed indexing is present for each entry, with a focus on systematics. Zoological Record searchers should rely on the detailed subject and systematic thesauri for effective searching. Updated monthly.
