SUMMARY:Research and Teaching: How ICPSR Can Help!
DESCRIPTION:The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is a data archive of which the University of Maine is a member. Most people know ICPSR for its Summer Program classes or because they used data from the catalog for a long-ago research project. ICPSR is those things\, and much more!  Join us to find out how ICPSR can help with research (primary and secondary)\, including meeting federal requirements\, and with teaching courses across the curriculum. With over 10\,000 studies\, plus other resources\, ICPSR has something for (almost) everyone! This informal presentation will include a look at ICPSR’s offerings with plenty of freedom for individual exploration. \nRegistration for the workshop is available online.

SUMMARY:Citation Management Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Large research projects\, especially theses and dissertations\, involve extensive use of a variety of publications. It’s difficult to locate and organize these materials and their citations\, and to represent these references in the required format. Citation managers can be a big help on this side of the research process. \nThis workshop is intended to provide an overview of citation management software. We’ll use examples from multiple managers to demonstrate the capabilities and usefulness of these tools. As well\, we will discuss some of the considerations in choosing a citation manager. \nIf you’re about to embark upon a significant project\, or you’ve begun a project and are feeling a bit overwhelmed by its complexity\, this workshop may be a big help. \nTo attend\, please RSVP online. The workshop will be held in the Fogler Library Classroom 1.

SUMMARY:Data Management Planning Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Research data has value long after you publish an article. Where can you store it to comply with funder requirements? How can you share it with future collaborators\, or store sensitive data securely? Use a data management plan and UMaine’s Advanced Computing Group (ACG) resources to organize the collection\, analysis\, and preservation of your research data. \nAt this workshop\, learn about what ACG has to offer for all your research data compliance needs\, including the Data Management Plan Tool (DMPTool)\, Maine Dataverse Network\, and cloud data storage options—including Google Drive\, Box and Seafile—for handling your large data sets. \nLaptops will be available for attendees who need to borrow one. This workshop is presented in collaboration with ACG. To attend online via Zoom\, please contact acg@maine.edu. \nAbout the Presenter\nAmi Gaspar is the UMaine ACG Outreach Specialist. SUMMARY:Mendeley Citation Manager Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Note to RefWorks users: RefWorks will be phased out by the end of the academic year. These workshops may help you choose a new citation manager and learn how to import your RefWorks record to a new platform. \nLarge research projects\, especially theses and dissertations\, involve extensive use of a variety of publications. It’s difficult to locate and organize these materials and their citations and to represent these references in the required format. Citation managers can be a big help on this side of the research process. \nThis semester\, Fogler Library will host both general citation management workshops and workshops focused on specific citation managers. If you plan to attend the general workshops and/or specific citation manager workshops\, please RSVP online. The dates and times are: \n\nCitation Manager Workshop\, Wednesday 1/30\, 4-6pm\nCitation Manager Workshop\, Tuesday 2/5\, 6-8pm\nZotero Workshop\, Tuesday 2/19\, 4-6pm\nMendeley Workshop\, Monday 2/25\, 4-6pm\nEndNote Basic Workshop\, Wednesday 2/27\, 4-6pm

SUMMARY:Introduction to MATLAB
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will offer beginners a hands-on introduction to MATLAB\, one of the most popular data analysis and programming tools used in academic and professional settings. We will start with an introduction to the overall platform and environment\, look at how data is handled/displayed and then present the GUI (graphical user interface) and basic programming syntax. \nIn hands-on exercises\, participants will upload files\, manipulate simple example data sets\, write script\, use some MATLAB functions\, and create figures. Attendees can apply the coding concepts toward a variety of programming languages after the workshop. \nPrevious coding experience is not required. We recommend bringing fully charged laptops\, with MatLab already installed. Laptops will be available for attendees who need to borrow one. If you would prefer to attend online\, email acg@maine.edu for connection information. \nAbout the Presenter\nProfessor Andrew Thomas\, School of Marine Sciences\, is an oceanographer with over 30 years of data analysis and programming experience in a number of languages.
