SUMMARY:Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis of Spatial-Temporal Data in R
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Fogler Library and Wheatland Geospatial Programs\, “Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis of Spatial-Temporal Data in R ” will explore recent advancements in hierarchical random effects models using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods with application and examples for statistical ecology. The focus is on linear and generalized linear modeling frameworks that accommodate spatial and temporal associations. Lecture and exercises offer an applied perspective on model specification\, identifiability of parameters\, and computational considerations for Bayesian inference from posterior distributions. \nRegistration is required. Further details and required pre-workshop preparation can be found online. \nWebconferencing option available on request. Contact Tony Guay at anthony.p.guay@maine.edu with any questions. \nIf you are a person with a disability and need an accommodation to participate in this program\, please call Cindy Paschal\, School of Forest Resources\, as early as possible at 581-2841 or cpaschal@maine.edu to discuss your needs.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Cloud Data Storage
DESCRIPTION:Research data has value long after you publish an article. Where can you store your data to comply with funder requirements? How can you share it with future collaborators\, or store sensitive data securely? \nCloud data storage\, a vital component of research data management\, will help you meet these needs. At this workshop\, learn about Google Drive and Box\, as well as ACG’s Seafile for your large data sets. Time permitting\, hear about other ACG resources\, including DMPTool\, Maine Dataverse Network\, and virtual machines. \nThis workshop is presented in collaboration with UMaine’s Advanced Computing Group. If you would prefer to attend online instead\, please contact acg@maine.edu. \nAbout the Presenter\nAmi Gaspar is the Outreach Specialist for the Advanced Computing Group at the University of Maine. Ami is fluent in tech/geek speak\, able to cross multiple operating systems in a single bound\, and serves as a translator to the non-technical while informing the technically inclined of ACG services. While some like to think Ami is short for Artificial Mental Intelligence\, she does run on human brain power.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Patent Searching
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide an overview of what a patent is and how to use freely accessible patent databases to conduct research on both current and historical patents. The workshop is geared towards a general audience and will include handouts and an opportunity to practice searching a patent database. \nPlease register online to reserve your spot. Registration is open until the workshop begins. \nIf you’re unable to attend this workshop but are interested in setting up an information session with the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Representative at the University of Maine please send an email to rachel.a.knapp@maine.edu.

SUMMARY:Fake news\, misinformation\, and political bias: News literacy for the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, Fogler Library will host a second session of the Fake News Workshop originally held on March 26! \nSpace is limited and registration is required. Please share the online registration with students\, faculty\, or staff who wish to attend. \n\n\nClaims about fake news\, bias\, and misinformation have become much more prevalent in the past few years. But what is “fake news”? And what role does personal bias play in our perception of the news? Being a more informed 21st-century citizen requires a critical approach to the media. Join Judith Rosenbaum\, Assistant Professor in Communication and Journalism\, and Jen Bonnet\, Social Sciences & Humanities Librarian\, for an interactive workshop where we will unpack the many meanings of “fake news” and learn how to critically evaluate information we find online.

SUMMARY:Managing Your Citations Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Large research projects\, especially theses and dissertations\, involve extensive use of a variety of publications. It’s difficult to locate and organize these materials and their citations\, and to represent these references in the required format. Citation managers can be a big help on this side of the research process. \nThis workshop is intended to provide an overview of citation management software. We’ll use examples from multiple managers to demonstrate the capabilities and usefulness of these tools. As well\, we will discuss some of the considerations in choosing a citation manager. \nIf you’re about to embark upon a significant project\, or you’ve begun a project and are feeling a bit overwhelmed by its complexity\, this workshop may be a big help. \nTo attend\, please RSVP online. The workshop will be held in the Fogler Library Classroom 1.

SUMMARY:R for Beginners Workshop
DESCRIPTION:R is a widely used language and environment for managing\, graphing\, and analyzing data of all forms (e.g.\, spatial\, quantitative\, and qualitative). R continues to evolve and has a large – and growing – base of users. R is very useful for a range of purposes\, and this workshop will provide an introduction and demonstration of some of its capabilities. \nThis session of the Fogler Library Workshop Series is presented in collaboration with UMaine’s Advanced Computing Group\, which provides computing infrastructure and support for the research needs of the state of Maine. \nIf you would prefer to attend online instead\, please contact acg@maine.edu. \nAbout the Presenter\nProfessor Aaron Weiskittel is the Acting Director for the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests\, which is leading efforts to use “big data” to improve forest management in the region. Aaron has used R since its early beginnings and has helped several students learn the program.
