DESCRIPTION:Large research projects\, especially theses and dissertations\, involve extensive use of a variety of publications. It’s difficult to locate and organize these materials and their citations\, and to represent these references in the required format. Citation managers can be a big help on this side of the research process. \nThis workshop is intended to provide an overview of citation management software. We’ll use examples from multiple managers to demonstrate the capabilities and usefulness of these tools. If you would prefer to attend via Adobe Connect instead\, email acg@maine.edu. \nAbout the Presenter \nDr. Bruce A. Maxwell started exploring computer science as an undergraduate at Swarthmore College. He went on to obtain an M.Phil. in Speech Recognition at Cambridge University and a Ph.D. in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. He taught for two years at the University of North Dakota and nine years at Swarthmore College before going to Colby College in the fall of 2007. His interests include robotics\, computer vision\, computer graphics\, scientific data analysis and visualization.

We recommend bringing fully charged laptops\, with Python already installed. Laptops will be available for attendees who need to borrow one. \nAbout the Presenter\nKendra Bird\, a Faculty Associate in Anthropology and a member of the Fogler Library Circulation staff\, has been coding off and on since she was a child. Her recent experience includes a two-year stint as a software developer at the Virtual Environment and Multimodal Interaction (VEMI) Lab on campus\, as well as some Python and PHP coursework. She enjoys teaching people about coding and emerging technology.

SUMMARY:Introduction to MATLAB
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will offer beginners a hands-on introduction to MATLAB\, one of the most popular data analysis and programming tools used in academic and professional settings. We will start with an introduction to the overall platform and environment\, look at how data is handled/displayed and then present the GUI (graphical user interface) and basic programming syntax. \nIn hands-on exercises\, participants will upload files\, manipulate simple example data sets\, write script\, use some MATLAB functions\, and create figures. Attendees can apply the coding concepts toward a variety of programming languages after the workshop. \nPrevious coding experience is not required. We recommend bringing fully charged laptops\, with MatLab already installed. Laptops will be available for attendees who need to borrow one.
