SUMMARY:Make Music with Your Computer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to make music with a computer? Or learn more about programming in a fun way? This workshop will introduce you to the process of making music with a computer using Supercollider\, an open source music programming language used by composers\, audio researchers and programmers around the world. \nBy the end of this workshop\, you will have a basic understanding of some programming concepts as they apply to music (variables\, loops\, etc)\, and you’ll gain a new appreciation of making music through computers! \nNo experience is needed in either music or programming\, but an interest in either one or both is great! Laptops can be provided if needed. \nAbout the Presenter: Rod O’Connor is a current graduate student in the MSIS program\, and has a BA in experimental computer music from Wesleyan University.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the Human Dimensions of Climate Change Film Series\, a screening of the Years of Living Dangerously episode “Ice & Brimstone” will take place in the Fogler Library Classroom on March 28. \nThe screening will also include a discussion led by Dr. Paul Mayewski\, Director and Professor at the Climate Change Institute. \nYears of Living Dangerously is an Emmy-winning climate change series featuring some of Hollywood’s most influential stars. The series reveals emotional and hard-hitting accounts of the effects of climate change from across the planet. \nThe Human Dimensions of Climate Change Film Series is sponsored by the Department of Anthropology\, the Climate Change Institute\, and Fogler Library. SUMMARY:Books in My Life: Jacquelyn Gill
DESCRIPTION:Jacquelyn Gill is an Assistant Professor of Paleoecology and Plant Ecology at the University of Maine. As a paleoecologist and biogeographer\, she is interested in using the natural experiments of the past to inform conservation in the Anthropocene. Jacquelyn applies an interdisciplinary approach combining paleoenvironmental reconstructions from lake sediments\, modern field ecology\, and modeling. Research in the Gill Lab focuses on climate change\, extinction\, and biotic interactions through time\, from species to communities to ecosystems. \nAs a scientist\, her goal is to help other ecologists\, conservationists\, and policy makers better understand how ecosystems have responded to past change\, in order to make informed decisions about present and future landscapes. \nAbout the series: In this series\, members of the UMaine community will speak about their experience of reading\, their awakening as readers\, their past and current best books (and maybe even their worst reads). They’ll venture far outside their scholarly fields and bring us into the world of their personal reading.
