R continues to evolve and has a large – and growing – base of users. DESCRIPTION:Large research projects\, especially theses and dissertations\, involve extensive use of a variety of publications. It’s difficult to locate and organize these materials and their citations\, and to represent these references in the required format. Citation managers can be a big help on this side of the research process. \nThis workshop is intended to provide an overview of citation management software. We’ll use examples from multiple managers to demonstrate the capabilities and usefulness of these tools. SUMMARY:Introductory Python: Making Pictures with Code
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will introduce you to the basic concepts of writing and executing code using the Python language. No prior knowledge of coding is expected. We’ll go over how to write\, edit\, and execute a Python program and basic programming concepts like functions\, loops\, and conditional statements. \nTo demonstrate and practice these concepts we’ll create pictures using the turtle graphics package. By writing compact and efficient code we can create complicated and interesting images. We’ll also see how what we learn by making pictures applies to tasks like manipulating and analyzing data or text files. \nIf you would prefer to attend online instead\, please contact acg@maine.edu. \nAbout the Presenter\nDr. Bruce A. Maxwell started exploring computer science as an undergraduate at Swarthmore College\, where he earned a B.A. in Political Science\, a B.S. in\nEngineering\, and a Concentration in Computer Science. He went on to obtain an M.Phil. in Speech Recognition at Cambridge University and a Ph.D. in Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. He taught for two years at the University of North Dakota and nine years at Swarthmore College before coming to Colby in the fall of 2007. His interests include robotics\, computer vision\, computer graphics\, scientific data analysis and visualization.

How can you share it with future collaborators\, or store sensitive data securely? \nCloud data storage\, a vital component of research data management\, will help you meet these needs. At this workshop\, learn about Google Drive and Box\, as well as ACG’s Seafile for your large data sets. Time permitting\, hear about other ACG resources\, including DMPTool\, Maine Dataverse Network\, and virtual machines. \nThis workshop is presented in collaboration with UMaine’s Advanced Computing Group. If you would prefer to attend online instead\, please contact acg@maine.edu. \nAbout the Presenter\nAmi Gaspar is the Outreach Specialist for the Advanced Computing Group at the University of Maine. Ami is fluent in tech/geek speak\, able to cross multiple operating systems in a single bound\, and serves as a translator to the non-technical while informing the technically inclined of ACG services. While some like to think Ami is short for Artificial Mental Intelligence\, she does run on human brain power.
