1. TONIGHT, Books in My Life: Reading that Transforms with Professor Laura Cowan

In this series, members of the UMaine community will speak about their experience of reading, their awakening as readers, their past and current best books (and maybe even their worst reads). They’ll venture far outside their scholarly fields and bring us into the world of their personal reading.

The next installment of this series will feature Professor Laura Cowan, Chair of the English Department and Professor of English, who will present on Wednesday, November 16 at 7pm in the Fogler Library Classroom.

Please share this event with any students, staff, or faculty who might be interested in attending.

2. THURSDAY, Workshop: Introduction to R for Data Analysis and Visualization

This seminar will offer new users a hands-on introduction to R, one of the most dynamic and widely-used programming languages in the world. R is an open source language with thousands of developers working constantly to create and refine new packages for a variety of disciplinary applications — and it’s entirely free. While the course will be focused on fundamentals useful to all disciplines, some class time will be reserved for discipline-specific work in order to demonstrate for all learners the broad applicability of R. Topics could include text mining, machine learning, agent-based modeling, spatial analysis, and app development. No prior experience with R or programming required.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, November 17, from 6-8pm in the Fogler Library Classroom.

Please share information about this workshop with any students or staff who might be interested in learning about R.
