At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. Any witnesses to the incident are encouraged to contact Lt. Noel Santiago at noel.santiago@maine.edu.

The University of Maine Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) project is a joint effort of Fogler Library and the Graduate School. This online collection features the final theses and dissertations approved by the Graduate School of the University of Maine.

1. New UMaine Finding Aids Available
More finding aids for University of Maine records held by Fogler Library have been added to the finding aid page on Digital Commons. The most recent finding aids are for the papers of former faculty member Geddes Simpson, Fogler Library’s administrative records, former mathematics professor Earl M. Beard, and health care information from the papers of Martha Eastman. Matthew Revitt (matthew.revitt@maine.edu), Special Collections and Maine Shared Collection Librarian is currently processing the papers of late University of Maine professors David C. Smith and the Chemistry Department.

2. Hour of Code
December 11, 7:00pm – 8:00pm
Fogler Library Classroom 1

Celebrate the winter season and the worldwide Hour of Code at Fogler Library. In this introductory, hands-on workshop, learn how to use the programming language Python to draw snowflakes on your screen.

No previous coding experience required. Children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult. We recommend bringing fully charged laptops, with Python already installed. Laptops will be available for attendees who need to borrow one.

About the Presenter
Kendra Bird is a PhD student in the School of Computing and Information Science and a member of the Fogler Library staff.
