UMaine Libraries and Facilities Management partner for recycling!
As part of our Sustainable Libraries Initiative certification work, supported by Dan Dixon, Director of the Office of Sustainability, UMaine Libraries has partnered with Facilities Management on a new campus-wide recycling initiative. We would like to give a special thanks to Jodi Munster, Director of Operations at Facilities Management, for her tremendous support and exceptional efforts coordinating teams at the Bookstore, Central Supply, Resource Recovery, UMaine Dining, and UMaine Libraries. Munster’s team coordinates the pick up of flexible plastic for shipment to Kohl’s in Bangor on a regular basis, which in turn ships the plastic for recycling into composite decking, outdoor furniture and a variety of other products. (Hard plastics and paper are recycled separately through our campus’s existing recycling program.)
If you want to recycle your personal flexible plastics, a number of stores in the area including Target, Kohl’s and some branches of Hannaford have drop-off points for these materials. Flexible plastics that may be recycled include clean grocery bags, produce bags, bread bags, case overwrap, plastic shipping envelopes and more. Printable, more comprehensive lists of acceptable items and non acceptable items are available here. As with other recycled items, items that are not clean are considered contaminated and will end up in the regular garbage.

Fogler exhibit celebrates the University of Maine Press
An exhibit currently on display at Fogler Library celebrates the University of Maine Press, a division of UMaine Libraries, and highlights one of its most recent publications, the 3rd edition of “Maine Amphibians and Reptiles.” The narrative traces the journey of the book from the time the draft is submitted to the printers, through the various proofs and finally to the finished product which is ready to be shipped out for distribution and sale. The display includes copies of the first and second editions of the book and a brief history of UMaine Press.
| | | New from Special Collections and Projects | | Over fifty visitors joined tours of Special Collections and Projects this past weekend as part of Friends & Family Weekend. Visitors learned more about some of UMaine’s traditions, including the Stein Song and Bananas, and got to view some of the unique items in the Special Collections and Projects collection. Particular highlights for many were the gown and cap worn by President John F. Kennedy when he received his honorary degree from UMaine in 1963, and the oldest book in the Library’s collection, a copy of Dante’s “Convivio” from 1490. | | |
Special Collections and Projects is temporarily housing items from the University of Maine’s hockey hall of fame during the construction at the Harold Alfond Sports Arena. Among the photos, memorabilia, and trophies being housed is the 1988 NCAA Plaque shown being held by the University Archivist Matthew Revitt.

Special Collections and Projects welcomed the University of Maine System’s General Counsel staff who were here to visit items related to President John F. Kennedy’s visit to UMaine in 1963 to receive an honorary degree in law.
Special Collections holds the robe and cap worn by President Kennedy, a copy of the diploma given to him, and photographs from the ceremony.
Shown in the picture are Crawford Cleveland, Associate General Counsel; Amon Purinton, General Counsel; and Katelynn Ronan, Associate General Counsel.

Special Collections and Projects recently received a donation of manuscripts of “Thoughts While Shaving” columns authored by former University of Maine President Winthrop C. Libby (1969–1973). The articles were published in the “Ellsworth American” from 1973 through 1991 and offer a wonderful insight into a variety of topical issues ranging from vehicles to retirement. The columns also offer fascinating details of Libby’s time as president and life growing up picking potatoes in Caribou, Maine.
The articles were kindly donated to Special Collections by Libby’s son Dr. Lawrence (Larry) W. Libby ’62, pictured looking at photographs of his father from the University Archive. Also pictured below (right) is President Winthrop C. Libby.
