Therapy Dogs at Fogler Library December 9 and 11
Once again, the perennially popular therapy dogs will be in residence in the reserve reading room on the first floor of Fogler Libraries on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and Thursday, Dec. 11, from 2–4 p.m.
Since 2013, when Fogler’s then–public relations manager Gretchen Gfeller partnered with Rebecca Henderson of Renaissance Dogs, these canines and their volunteer handlers have been helping students manage stress — both during the pressure of finals and at the start of the academic year.
Everyone is welcome to stop by and unwind with these delightful dogs, whose presence is sure to bring a smile to anyone who meets them.

Fogler Foundations for Future Black Bears
Fogler Foundations is a teaching initiative of the Research & Instruction Department at Fogler Library designed to provide early research instruction for high school classes working on a research project or capstone. We provide on-campus, librarian-led instruction on: using academic resources, employing effective search strategies, special collections, concept mapping, and more. High school teachers and school librarians in the Bangor area are able to work with a librarian to coordinate an instructional plan, an optional special collections activity, as well as travel reimbursement for visiting classes and catered lunch for the visit.
This initiative, which shows potential future Black Bears the opportunities that await them, is made possible by the University of Maine Library Special Initiatives Fund, a generous gift from Dean of Cultural Affairs & Libraries at the University of Maine Elaine Albright (1983–2003).
Local high schools who wish to participate can reach out to Science Librarian Christopher Clark at christopher.clark@maine.edu for more info or to schedule a class visit for Spring 2026. We are seeking smaller class sizes with a specific project or research goal, with visits taking place in the latter half of the semester.

Open Access Article Processing Charge Waivers for UM/UMM and UMS
UMaine Libraries has a small number of publisher licensing agreements that enable UMaine and University of Maine at Machias faculty, staff, and students to publish their research as open access (OA) journal articles, without the need to pay an article processing charge (APC). The publishers listed here do not charge the library any additional fees for OA publishing on top of the library’s existing subscription cost. As indicated on this page, some are available only to UMaine and UMM authors, while some are available to the entire University of Maine System. Two additional publishers have been added for 2024-2026: Company of Biologists, and Royal Society of Chemistry.
