Featured Resource: BIOSIS Previews
Worldwide in scope, BIOSIS Previews, the premier database in the biological sciences, indexes the literature of the biological and biomedical sciences. Subject coverage includes agriculture, biochemistry, bioengineering, botany, ecology, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, and zoology. The database indexes approximately 5,500 serial publications as well as books, proceedings, and meeting abstracts, technical reports, review papers, and patents. Users can search 58 separate data fields including organism, concepts, and super taxa. Searches can be limited to review articles. Updated weekly.
1. Friend, Enemy, or Frenemy? A News Literacy Challenge

Join UMaine’s Fogler Library and the Department of Communication and Journalism for Friend, Enemy, or Frenemy? A News Literacy Challenge. Each day, for five days, participants will receive brief tasks designed to build their news literacy, while having fun and learning something new. Activities include discerning fact from fiction in popular news stories, de/constructing the purpose and content of the news, and examining the role of confirmation bias in how we interact with news media.

2. SciFinder-n Now Available
UMaine patrons now have access to SciFinder-n, a new version of the SciFinder database. SciFinder-n provides several sources of chemical information, including structure searching, substance searching (by keyword CAS registry numbers, or patent number), reaction searching, reference search, retrosynthesis planning, and citation mapping. SciFinder-n requires registration; users with an account on the old Scifinder platform may use that to log in.
New users must register for the SciFinder-n through the link provided for first-time users at UMaine in our online guide to Scifinder. Additionally, CAS will hold webinars about SciFinder-n on October 19th and October 22nd.
3. University of Maine COVID-19 Community Archive
The University of Maine COVID-19 Community Archive is a collection of items compiled in Digital Commons that seeks to document and preserve the experiences of the University of Maine community during the pandemic. There are already over 700 items in the collection, including course material, personal perspectives, University-wide and departmental communications, photographs, videos, and research material.
University Archivist Matthew Revitt (matthew.revitt@maine.edu) encourages faculty to send him material that illustrates the effects of COVID-19 on teaching, learning, and research and also how they’ve incorporated the subject of COVID-19 into their curriculum.
4. Hot Topics: Elections
Published by the Reference and Information Literacy Department at Fogler Library, the Hot Topics: Elections Guide provides useful information on voting in the United States. The guide includes background information on voting and voting trends as well as practical information about voting or registering to vote in the upcoming election.
The guide also features up-to-date information on the presidential, congressional, and local elections on November 3, 2020. Please share this guide with students or colleagues interested in learning more about the 2020 elections.
