Featured Resource: Research Data Management Guide
Good data practices help researchers effectively track and share their work. And, data management plans in particular are increasingly required in grant applications. Fogler Library’s research data management guide includes best practices for data description and storage, key UMaine resources and support, and tools for researchers at all stages of their research process.
1. URSUS Maintenance Tonight
In order to complete necessary upgrades, URSUS will be down for a four hour period occurring sometime between 6:00 pm on Tuesday, February 2nd, and 8:00 am on Wednesday, February 3rd.
During this time, you will not be able to access URSUS or use it to search for library resources. You will still have access to online databases and journals via single sign-on.
2. Racial Justice Collection on Digital Commons
The University of Maine Racial Justice Collection is a Digital Commons archive of primary sources by, from, and about the Black community and racial justice issues at the University of Maine and in the greater Bangor region. The collection was created in response to the increased social awareness of racial justice issues in the United States following the murder of George Floyd in the spring of 2020.
University Archivist Matthew Revitt (matthew.revitt@maine.edu) encourages faculty to send him curriculum material and publications they may have created on the subject of racial justice.
3. Adding Electronic Course Reserves to Brightspace
Faculty can now provide access to their electronic course reserves through Brightspace. To configure access to your course reserves via Brightspace, please use the following steps:
- Access Brightspace
- Create a course module and name it “Electronic Reserves”
- Add “External Learning” tool
- “Add a Link” for “Ares Course Reserves”
- Once link appears: click the dropdown arrow on right > “Edit Properties In-Place” > checkmark “Open as External Resource”
- Email um.library.circ@maine.edu. Note your course number, section, and ask to add your “Course Offering Code” to Ares. Library staff will let you know when it is ready to access
After access is configured, students can log into Brightspace, locate your course, and find readings in the “Electronic Reserves” module.
4. Cloud-Based Data Storage Workshop
February 3, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Online via Zoom
Explore the array of cloud-based data storage options available to the University of Maine System students, faculty, and staff. Discover how to utilize Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive to their fullest potential to bring out all your data’s potential. Learn how to store, share & manage your data with ease on multiple devices and operating systems.
This workshop will be held online via Zoom.
About the Presenter
Ami Gaspar is the University of Maine System Advanced Computing Group Outreach Specialist. She is fluent in tech/geek speak, can cross multiple operating systems in a single bound, and serves as a translator to the non-technical while informing the technically inclined of ACG services.
5. Book Lover’s Trivia
February 4, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Online via Zoom
Are you a book lover with a love of trivia? Come join Fogler Librarians in a test of your literary knowledge! Fogler will be hosting a fun-filled, book-themed trivia event, covering various book genres including fantasy, horror, classics, children’s lit, and art. This event will occur over Zoom. Participants can join solo or with a partner. Teams will not be needed.
