What’s “Fogler Plus”? Raymond H. Fogler Library, Merrill Library in Machias, Maine InfoNet, and the University of Maine Press provide library collections and related services under the direction of the University of Maine Dean of Libraries. We’ve renamed this newsletter to better reflect all Fogler Plus news and initiatives.

Welcome Fogler’s First Open Scholarship Librarian!

Casey Koons has been appointed Fogler’s first Open Scholarship Librarian and will begin his tenure on May 1, 2024. Koons will be Fogler’s liaison for Open Access publishing, copyright, and Open Educational Resources (OER); and provide strategic leadership for our institutional repository, Digital Commons, and digital scholarship projects. He will be part of our newly created Open Scholarship unit within the Special Collections & Projects department. Casey comes to UMaine from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, where he was the Assistant Librarian for Scholarly Communication. Casey holds a MLIS from Syracuse University, an M.A. in Comparative Religion from Miami University, and was a Graduate Fellow in Religion at Syracuse University. Casey is originally from the mid coast Maine area.
Data Management Planning for the Research Data Lifecycle

Want to know more about the research data management lifecycle? Please join Ami Gaspar, Outreach Specialist for the UMS Advanced Computing Group (ACG), for a hands-on session on how ACG resources can cover your research data needs. From preparing data management plans to analysis tools, archiving, and sharing, the ACG has the resources you need for your research data. The session will cover Data Management Plan Tool (DMPTool), ACG Virtual Machines and HPC for data analysis, and Maine Dataverse Network. “Data Management Planning for the Research Data Lifecycle” will be held in person and via Zoom on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 6 pm in Fogler Library Classroom 1. Registration is required.  (Gaspar has a UMaine MBA in Business Analytics with over 15 years of computing experience. She is fluent in tech/geek speak, can cross multiple operating systems in a single bound, and serves as a translator to the non-technical while informing the technically inclined of ACG services.)

This collection consists exclusively of documents generated by town governments in the state of Maine dating from 1827 to the present. These include annual reports, comprehensive plans, charters, minutes of meetings, maps, and other materials that document the activities of local government. The documents provide information on a variety of subjects pertaining to local governance, such as education, infrastructure, and the local economy. Those dating from before the mid-twentieth century also provide information for the provision of welfare services to local residents. The documents dating from the early twentieth century onward provide information about town planning and environmental issues.
