Canadian Studies
The Canadian Studies Collection is jointly funded by Fogler Library and the Canadian-American Center.
About the Collection
Fogler Library has a nationally recognized Canadian Studies collection of monographs and serials. The collection also includes large numbers of maps, Canadian census materials and Canadian federal and provincial documents in both print and electronic formats. Materials are cataloged in URSUS. Print materials are housed as part of the general library collections of books, periodicals, documents, and microforms.
Early Canadiana, Canadiana Online, and Héritage
These collections are published by the Canadian Research Knowledge Network, an alliance of scholars and representatives of major memory institutions from across Canada. Early Canadiana contains over 80,000 rare books, magazines and government publications about Canada from the time of the first European settlers to the early decades of the 20th century. Fogler Library owns the Early Canadiana collections on CIHM (Canadian Institute for Historic Microreproduction) microfiche, with bibliographic records available in URSUS.
Related open access digital collections: Canadiana Online contains 96,000 titles of digitized historical publications, including all monograph content from the CIHM microfiche series, as well as additional materials, largely published prior to 1921. Héritage is a joint project supported by CRKN members and Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and draws from the rich resources of archival microfilm held by Library and Archives Canada. Héritage includes 41 million pages (over 900 collections) from some of Canada’s most popular archival collections chronicling the country and its people from the 17th to the mid-20th centuries. The majority of the material in Héritage is handwritten.
Canadian Newspapers
Fogler Library has holdings or access to a number of Canadian newspapers, with a focus on Eastern Canada, including the Maritimes.
Canadian Census Materials
Fogler Library owns several forms of Canadian census materials. These include selected copies of nominal censuses (door-to-door surveys taken by census takers) in print and microform, and bound versions of aggregate censuses of Canada published by the Canadian Government. In addition, Fogler Library provides access to the database Ancestry Library, which includes searchable indexes and images for Canadian [nominal] censuses from 1825 to 1921, and selected provincial and agricultural censuses.
Dissertations and Theses on Canada
Fogler Library has over 400 master’s theses and doctoral dissertations on Canada written by University of Maine students in the social sciences and humanities. Original copies of these works are housed in the Special Collections Department of the library and are cataloged in URSUS, the University of Maine’s online catalog. In addition, most UMaine dissertations and theses written after 2000 are available in full-text electronic format in Digital Commons.
Fogler Library also offers access to theses and dissertations on Canada produced outside the university. Theses Canada provides access to theses and dissertations from Canadian universities in microfiche and electronic formats. The database ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global offers full-text access to Canadian theses from universities both in and outside the United States.
