(Hybrid) Tea with the Dean and Open Access Publishing Resources Showcase

UMaine Libraries’ Hybrid Tea with the Dean and Open Access Publishing Resources Showcase with Head of Collection Services Deb Rollins and Open Scholarship Librarian Casey Koons will take place on Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m. in the Salon, Fogler Library, and via Zoom.

Deborah Rollins will talk about open access collections and costs, as well as library support of University of Maine authors through open access publishing fee waivers.

Casey Koons will discuss key aspects of his role in advancing open access publication. He will outline the introduction of a new DOI-minting service, designed to provide persistent identifiers that enhance the accessibility and discoverability of scholarly and creative work. Koons will also highlight the role of institutional repositories in supporting Open Access initiatives, ensuring broader dissemination and long-term preservation of research outputs. Additionally, he will share updates on efforts to improve the functionality and usability of repository platforms, focusing on transitioning to more automated, modern systems that are intuitive and easy to navigate for both researchers and administrators.

Fogler Highlights March Commemorative Months

As March is both Women’s History Month, and Maine’s Francophonie Month, we are highlighting both our Women’s History Resources guide and our Franco-American & Francophonie Resources guide. Both guides provide links to materials accessible through Fogler related to these two important groups.

This past fall, University Archivist Matthew Revitt and Frédéric Rondeau, professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Classics and director of the Canadian-American Center, taught the RLE entitled “Fight the Power: Exploring the History of Student Activism at UMaine through Archives.”

Situating UMaine in the historical context of activism in the U.S. and the world, student research projects focused on different aspects of militancy such as Franco-American Identity; Civil Rights; Gay Rights; Gender Studies; Reproductive Rights; Student Protests in response to the Vietnam War; and the Counterculture Movement.

Students had the opportunity to hear guest speakers such as Susan Pinette of the Franco-American Centre and An Thuy Nguyen of Cooperative Extension, and also to think about how students shaped the history of the university, including the perspectives of student activists Steve Bull (co-founder of Wilde-Stein) and Willow Wetherall (former president of the UMaine Women’s Student Association and founding member of the UMaine NARAL chapter).

Research posters produced by students as part of the class will be on display in the Center Hallway on Level 1 of Fogler Library for the remainder of the Spring Semester.
