Course Reserves

Course Reserves provide access to required readings and materials for UMaine courses. These materials are submitted by UMaine departments and organizations.

Reserve materials are either Physical items kept at the Reserves Desk, or Electronic resources which can be accessed through our online catalog LibrarySearch.

Policies

  • Borrowing: To borrow physical reserve materials, you need a valid UMaine ID.
  • Loan Periods: Items can be borrowed for either 4 hours or 2 days, depending on what your instructor has specified.
  • Borrowing Limit: You can borrow a maximum of 3 items at a time.
  • No Holds or Renewals: Reserve materials cannot be placed on hold, and you cannot renew them.
  • Return Location: All borrowed materials must be returned directly to the Reserve Desk.
  • Overdue Fines: The fine for overdue items is $2.00 for the first hour past the due time. After the first hour the fine is $0.25 per hour.
  • Lost Materials: If you don’t return an item, you will be charged a replacement fee.

Accessing Reserves

Electronic Reserves

  • Find Your Course Reserves:
  • Use LibrarySearch to find your course or instructor.
  • Search by course number or instructor.
  • Choose the right course if there are multiple options.
  • Sort results by title (left side of page).
  • Click the first title to access all electronic reserves.
  • Access Reserves:
  • Follow the instructions and click “Access online resource” to log in with your MaineStreet credentials.
  • Register the first time you log in.
  • Login:
  • Enter your MaineStreet credentials.
  • First-time only: Complete the registration page.
  • Each semester: Select and bookmark your courses.
  • Search Courses:
  • In the left menu, go to Search Courses.
  • Select each instructor from the menu or enter each course number (e.g., ABC 123) and click the plus icon to bookmark. Choose Orono (ORO) courses only.
  • Bookmark Courses:
  • Each semester, go to Student Tools > Search Courses.
  • Select each instructor from the menu or enter each course number (e.g., ABC 123) and click the plus icon to add.
  • View Bookmarked Courses:
  • Go to Main Menu to see your bookmarked courses or follow the steps above to bookmark your courses.
  • Select any course to see readings. Click on any item to access it.
  • Add frequently viewed items to your Hot List by checking the boxes and clicking “Add checked items to Hot List” at the bottom.

Physical Reserves

  • Check Course Listings:
  • Look up your course before going to the Reserve Desk.
  • Items are usually loaned for 4 hours, but this can vary by course.
  • Most items can only be used in the library.
  • Search for Reserves:
  • Search by course number or instructor.
  • Choose the right course if there are multiple options.
  • Look at the list of readings and note the titles you need.
  • Bring Your MaineCard:
  • You need your MaineCard to check out materials.
  • Go to the Reserve Desk:
  • Tell the library staff which items you need to speed up the process.
  • You can borrow up to three items at once.
  • Show your MaineCard.
  • When you check-out, you’ll be told when the items are due back.
  • Return Materials:
  • Return items to the Reserve Desk when you’re done.
